I wouldn't think it would do any more harm to your skills than folks who switch between different size surfboards, snowboarding, skateboarding etc. Shawn White has won major contests in both snowboarding and skateboarding. I think the more athletic you are, the easier you can transition back n forth between different sports. The less athletic you are the more difficult it is to jump back n forth and take longer to get your skills back up to par. Same goes for longer layoffs. If you don't surf for a year, a less athletic person might take longer to get back up to par with where they were prior to the layoff.
