International Surfing Day

According to my calendar, it's international surfing day today. I didn't know one existed :oops:

don't know, but it's the first day of the Shark Island Challenge at Cronulla...

On the other hand, it's stupid having international surfing day mid week! How can I get to the beach?! Especially when it's mid winter in half of the world! :yearght:

If I had a car, I'd say dammit all, drive down to the south coast and sit on my board in the cold water for an hour or so just to show willing.

It's also on the shortest day for those of us in the southern hemisphere, which translates to a maximum temperature of 3 degrees, with a bit of snow where I live.

Stuff surfing in that, it should be "kiwi sit in front of the fire with your thermals on day". Shame though, it's been pumping all week.

I'm quessing Americans started this holiday, because its the first day of summer in America. Also America is the greatest country in the world, so of course we think of the coolest holiday.

That's strange... today's the summer solstice isn't it? Cos I remembered that for last years solsitce, me and two mates were in the water for 4.30am, and had a great dawny. We had such a great time that we suggested making the solstice 'surf day,' and whatever happened in the future, meeting up every solstice for a dawny. Didn''t happen this year, due to work/flatness considerations :cry:

So much for that idea then... Interested to see it made it on to Thaya's calander though! :shock:

I had a wicked surf this morning with two of my friends.
Water temperature was 22 deg c. Lovely.
Got loads of waves.
One of them mentioned it was Int Surf Day.

I've surfed the UK year round since I was a kid, used to wear a shorty and an anorak before I could afford a winter wettie, but it's way colder here - lots of big rivers with snow melting into them, makes the sea way colder. Mid winter in a 5/4, gloves, boots and a twat cap, I'll manage an hour or the first set on the head, and that's it.

But I have gone a bit poofy/poncey as old age sets in. Going snowboarding is nearly as much fun, and a lot warmer. So that's what I'll be doing this weekend.

Shame though, been watching perfect 4 foot waves with nobody on them all week.

Nah it's true. Never did any good. Was a long long time ago, I was young, didn't have any money, and it seemed like a good plan at the time

Only used to manage about 10 minutes in the sea before it all got a bit silly though.

75kmh winds up in the mountains tomorrow ans Sunday. Don't think there'll be any snowboarding happening. I'm going to sneak off work on Wednesday and head up to Porters, and do the same on Friday and go to Cheeseman, if that storm comes through on Thursday - could be nice freshies to be had.

its a great organization. International Surf Day is a day devoted to the beaches and our oceans. Around the world surfrider's local chapters gather and clean up the becahes, surf, and get stoked.

We have days that you have to avoid the ice chunks in the water. When you get out just after the ice clears, the water temps are normaly about 30 degrees. Definatly need the 6/5/4 with hood/boots/gloves....but can still get a 2 hour sesh in.
