epoxy surfboard repairs

how strong is it? i ding up my fiberglass board like mad, and i repaired the dings with solarez putty but theyre still turning yellow. it gets me irritated getting dings after dings... so i promised myself my next board would be epoxy. even if its a couple hundred more. is it worth it/? can a 6 foot epoxy board hold off hitting a rockwith my weight on it when my fiberglass doesnt?

it's a common misconception that epoxy boards are bulletproof.

They still ding and they are much, much harder to fix when they do ding.

They are more resistant bangs and scrapes in the car park but if you hit a rock whilst you are on it - you're looking a ding alright.

My advice before you buy one would be to find out if you have any ding repair guys for epoxy boards in your area and how much they charge.

they also dont ride the same as fiberglass, so ive heard

I have one, its also floats better than fiberglass. Mine has no dings and its been dropped on to concreate, hit against stuff, old, ect.

see that's another thing - I don't like my boards to be too floaty. Having ridden surftech back to back with it's "real" equivalent the surftech's just don;t feel right - they always feel like the skim accross the top of the wave rather than be in the wave.

I guess it comes down to personal preference like most things in life. There's no right or wrong, just what ever you like!

It definatly dosent skim. I meant its more boyant, like my 7'2 can float my 230 pound bro.

i just bought an epoxy longboard and am unhappy with it. like bassist said- it just doesn't feel right. you should try a demo board before you
go out and buy one.

Of course they're different to ride...they're different materials.
I rode one for the first time yesterday...loved it.

I think they're about 10-15% lighter...therefore 10-15% more bouyant, therefore you need to downsize your ride accordingly to get the same ride as your current glass board.
Example; my fave board at the moment is a 6' hybrid fish. Yesterday I rode a 5'10" Epox fish and it had the same buoyancy at my glass board.
It was stiffer for sure...but I liked it. Looked cool too, a nice high-gloss finish for a change rather than rough sanded fiberglass. Actually holding it...I could feel the weight difference when I put some fins in. Cool.

I'm really looking forward to what comes out soon with these things, I'll be getting one for sure when they get more shapes & styles down. Think of them now as like Japanese cars in the early 1980's...we ain't seen nothing yet.

There is a new product from Australia called Crystal which you can use to repair dings. It's really great stuff. It doesn't go yellow and it is over 2 times stronger than Solarez and Suncure. It also gives an absolutely clear finish and comes in multiple colors.
Also if you want a stronger fibreglass board ask for one that has been UV cured.
