I know this is a totally random question but when your underwater in the sea/ocean, surfing do you open your eyes or close them?

closed - real tight. and i dont think it is a wierd question. Im always suprised when people say they open their eyes.

def closed, I hate when you get sand lodged in your eye, it hurts wicked bad.I don't know why people would open why surfing, you're just asking to get something in your eye.

Im sure it happens to everyone but dont you just hate it when you shut your eyes real tight and the water manages to blow your bottom eyelid right open. Jeez, that hurts!!

All depends for me. If I have just been held under, and tossed through the rinse cycle, eyes are wide open trying to figure out which way is up :O

Exactly! When all there is is a green/brown blur there ain't no point in opening them.

I cant see anything even when i do open my eyes underwater, its just all blurry :cry:

And i'm not just talking about the chocolate coloured water of the UKs east coast

closed, until I'm resurfacing after a wipeout and I'm just about to come up, then i open them so I can see where I am and whether anything is about to hit me!

I once asked the same very question on another one of the surfing forums and got flamed to death. (Since then, I ditched it and came here instead where mostly everybody is friendly.) :lol:

What puzzles me is how come surfers never in all the years decided to wear goggles? I know it would look silly, but there is some practical use for them i.e. for safety and for contact wearers.

Closed...contact lenses! I can only see 6inches clearly without them, so I'd prefer not to lose any. Never tried opening my eyes underwater, as I wouldn't be able to tell if it was clear or not!

And the water drops all over the lenses made it hard to see when sitting up on my board trying to scout out a good wave set. I ditched the goggles and just keep my eyes closed...and bring a pair of backup contact lenses along since I'm blind without them.

I've been debating over goggles and contacts for when I'm surfing... last time I went I wore my prescription goggles, but they were a pain- kept coming off or fogging up. So, after reading around on the net, I think I'm going to try contacts next time. It seems a lot of people wear them.

Has anyone ever got an infection from wearing their contacts in the sea?
