Devon - three hours away.
South Wales - three hours.
South coast - 90 mins.
The surfing world does not revolve around newquay

To be fair to the south coast, not that Im entirely sure it deserves it, it does get the odd summer swell - but they're so short lived and so unreliable that they're not worth travelling for. If you live next to the coast, you'd catch the odd wave, but as a travelling surfer you'd be very lucky to be there at the right moment.
God knows how the surf's school run in summer -- getting people paddling about on foam boards on flat water most of the time I'd imagine
