Living away from the coast

How often do people get to surf if they are living away from the coast - eg living in Reading? Am keen to start but just wondering how often people can get to good surf spots - and where the closest ones are - Newquay @ 7 hours away!!!

how often is the south coast surfable in the summer though? You always seem a bit down on it on here.

I mean boscombe has a surf school open all summer so there must be something there right?

I live in Sheffield 96 miles and an hour and three quaters away from my favoured area, there are breaks slightly closer but not as good.

I surfed four days in Jan, nine days in Feb, and four so far this month.

It doesn't cost too much either if you can lift share, i took three others with me on Tuesday =£8 each.

Its very rarely surfable in summer. Its an unusually powerful storm in the summer months that can send more than a foot up the channel. May to september is the season for travelling west

The two spots everyone knows are croyde in north devon, and llangennith in south wales. Both good spots, and have breaks suitable for learning.

Somerset doesnt work (unless anyone on here knows different? But if they do I'll bet they're not telling where...)

To be fair to the south coast, not that Im entirely sure it deserves it, it does get the odd summer swell - but they're so short lived and so unreliable that they're not worth travelling for. If you live next to the coast, you'd catch the odd wave, but as a travelling surfer you'd be very lucky to be there at the right moment.

God knows how the surf's school run in summer -- getting people paddling about on foam boards on flat water most of the time I'd imagine

yep thats what they do i passed throw there one summer after a hol at devon and see them doing it i was lmfo but hay they have too earn a living

I remember when i was a student we all used to take the piss out of the surfers my bournemouth peir because they all used to just sit in the line up waiting for no existant waves.

I was wondering about that the boscombe surf school runs classes 7 days a week in the summer.

i was considering having a few top ups there but decided to go to the gower instead. Looks like i made the right decision.

yeah, I remember seeing a group of people learning to surf on foam boards somewhere near bournemouth in the summer but it was totally flat. I walked past wondering what on earth they were going to do...


and Reading? Your really lucky - it's only a few hours to devon from there.

I've surfed 13 days this month....but I had to go to Morocco to do it!

Before that it was 8 days since last July!
