As for ding repairs, lent my board to my cousins friend recently (he's apparently a 'great' surfer) got the board back with 3 dings on it. Pretty big and deep the biggest being around 4" long and about 1.5" deep :(
It's only 2 and a half months old... :(

Thats a very good idea about walking down the beach, I can usually find an uncrowded peak all to myself muhahahaha! Not that I mind hoards of swell-boarders.... 8)
