Ok, it does mess up that nice lookin nose on a brand new board, but they not only protect you and others from injury, they also stop you chipping the nose of your board (which is pretty easy to do).

I tried it, but never seen how it could make much difference. It didn't fit too good, it was a pain putting it on, I couldn't hardly breath with the damn thing on, people looked at me kinda weird when I had it on, and it was a nightmare getting it off....my nose was sore for days.
