Hey There

i owned a shortboard for a bit and now its all dinged up and tip has snaped off and the bottom is cracked.

would it be better to get it repaired or buy a new board , i was thinking of a longboard etc ? would i find that easy ?

What happend to your board? Does not sound good. I don't know how much to fix the nose but they can be fixed. Probably never be the same. If your a good surfer you will notice a big difference from what I have heard since I am not that good.

Where you just starting out surfing? If so maybe a long board would be the best way to go. Where you up and riding on your shortboard? Is there a place you can rent boards? If you are having questions about which kind of board you want you may want to rent different ones to see what you like.

I just went and looked at your other posts and you seemed to want to know if a long board was easier to ride. Yes much easier. Try something around 9feet or longer. I don't know how you all measure boards in the UK but 9feet is just short of 3 meters.

if you are starting out than a longboard would be easyer. the broken nose would only affect the way it rides if you broke it low on the nose. i snap the tip if the nose of one of my boards and since this area isn't in the water than it didn't change the way it rides. there are a few things to consider when you are buying a surfboard.
what type of surfing do you want to be doing.
do you want to be longboarding ot short boarding. if you want to longboard than get a board at 9'+, this will give stability and you'll be able to learn alot and keep it for a long time. if you want to shortboard than look into getting a funboard 7'6" -8' max, this will give you more stability but will turn easily.

how much time you are able to put into learning.
this is simple the more time you spend surfing the faster you will learn. very important if you are looking at a shorter board since it will take more attempts to stand up.

what kind of waves are you going to be riding.
crashing wave that makes a barrel or crumbling wave. crashing waves will be more difficult to learn on since they are steeper so you will be pearling alot more, but they do have more force behind them so you can catch them easier. crumbling waves are more gentle but since the don't push you as much i would go with a board with more planing surface.

your experience.
the more you surf the easier it is to learn. some one who has only longboard but has been surfing fo the past ten years won't have trouble learning on a thruster.

hope this helps. if you give me an answer to these four points than we could direct you to a type of board that would suit you better. but before you buy a surfboard you should try it out or find a simular board that you could rent to see if you like it. good luck.

Hi There

I wanted to put alot of time into surfing in the summer because its cold now .


I wanted to do long boarding because ive had a shortboard for a while and found it a bit hard to catch a wave ( limited space ) so would a long board be better to start with because its longer and more space to turn etc ?.

I am not looking to surf barrol waves yet just some good reasonable size waves 6 ft - 10 ft that will give me a good thrill and speed

My experiance has been 2 or 3 lessons and found it quite easy on there boards . When i tryed surfing on my shortboard i found it harder to push up into the surfing position and suceeded only a few times.

i totally agree that he is not in any place to surf those size waves, but it doesn't take long. it took me less than a year to surf 10ft waves. now it's something that only he will know when he is ready. 2-3 lesson is a big NOT READY, but at least he want to i know a bunch of people who will never do it just becaus they've already made that dicision.
