Water after a storm

I'm not sure about everywhere else, but in SD you're supposed to wait 72 hours after a storm to get in the water. So much pollution I guess they found Hepatitus in the water after storms and Ecali and xxxxx. Anyone from SoCal heard that....and do most people actually follow it?

If the rain is heavy i wont go in the next day. So i usually let around 36 hours go by before heading in. I make sure to stay away from river mouths or storm drains though. However i see a lot of people ignor it utterly and go right after it has rained . Personally i think 72 hours is good but i cant stand waiting that long

As it does not rain all that much all the bacteria builds up and glogs and the streets get dirty so if you go in too soon you are basically surfing in all that crap.

Im not sure storm surf is particually good either as it tends to drag a lot of crap to the shore. Almost ran into a big tin box of some sort today

It was a rock lobster trap. I heard on the news that there were a lot of them washing up from the swell. NOt like the old wooden and rop ones in Maine. A few buoys washed up near me today...I guess a big storm is headin in this weekend

yah, i usually wait 1-2 days after a significant amount of rain..just to be safe

I've been in during and after a storm.... a very stupid thing to do since nobody can see you, the water is brown, and I almost hit a lot of trees!

Was surfing North Cornwall a few years ago when the Boscastle flood happened, they found a dead cow in the open air sea pool at Bude, there was sh## every where.
As i was on holiday I wanted to get back in the water as soon as possible, one of the Locals said to leave it at least 48hrs but if I did go in before to drink a can of flat Coke to wash my system out? Never heard that before so decided to wait till the lifeguards re-opened the beaches.

heh, I was walking down the beach with my gf one day after a storm and we stumbled upon a HUGE dead pig. My god that was rancid.

Thank god we don't have that problem around here. Although the sewage system on the north side of the beach needs re-working, and about a week out of every month in the summer you can't get in the water or you get a bacterial infection.

One of my friends said, "eh, screw it" and was fine. Another one of my friends said that my other friend would be sick in two and a half weeks after the day he first surfed. And just like clock work......he turned green

The problem lies in all the fertalizers animal dropings and oil from the road being run off into the ocean. I went out one time right after a rain. I could taste the oil on my lips. It was nasty. I had to go home and use automotive soap on my lips to get rid of the taste. Now I waite unless it is really big and clean.

Some spots i surf a litteraly miles and miles from the nearest town!

when I use to kitesurf one of the older guys who use to windsurf said a lot of the windsurfers use to drink coke before they went out to try and stop stomach bugs etc. No idea if it works

ya i think you are right. Wouldnt suprise me casue theres good lobster trapping spots right by the reef i surf near. Didnt some guy drown up in la jolla last year casue they got tangled up in the traps

I don't think that the droppings and fertilzers are doing the harm. The area I surf and fish in is very agricultural, and these do create isssues--but I don't think in the sense that I have heard from getting sick. Most of these kill the oxygen in the water, creating dead zones and red tides. We see this the most where it rains a lot in the spring, where the farmers fertilize over and over in order to keep up.

This year was much milder throughout the summer, and we had a good water quality summer.

Of course, this is in our area, and also most of the farms are on rivers, which feed into the Chesapeake Bay, and then into the ocean.

We don't have issues with oil off the roads, that sounds awful.

well it actualy now depends on the surf 4ft surf im in no matter what, anything under i wont risk being fish food

well here in wales its rare to get a whole 72 hours without rain, so we dont really have a choice.
Mind you surfing in the rain has its drawbacks, i went in last weekend and it was absolutely hammering it down, when i came out i was drenched. gonna take a brolly next time.

Yeah, but I think it was over at windansea, probably not at shores, the break is so close in you could probably see all the traps, or they'd already be on the beach, plus there's no reef or point for them to catch onto.

Try surfing with one you could catch some thermals and do a mary poppins You would never go over the falls again
