Shaping my first surfboard

Shaping my first surfboard

Postby scuba steve » Sun Dec 10, 2006 6:12 pm

I just spent all day sectioning off a section of my garage with a wooden frame and polythene wrapped around it, to get it ready for shaping my first board. I also built my stands.

I watched shaping 101 and glassing 101 a coupe of weeks ago and went out and got my tools and materials that I'll need. I've just ordered my blank, resin glass etc. and cant wait t get underway!

I'm gonna make a 6'8 fatboy shortboard, kinda like a replica of one of my boards.

Keep you posted! :)

Good luck man. I did mine in the open air in the summer, started spotting with rain one day and finished it indoors, was as high as a kite for hours.

Good luck on the project.

Just one point following on from the previous reply.

Use a propa vapour mask, a dust musk is just not enough.
The chemicals in the MEKP activater are very dangerous.

Amen on the respirator.

Just go really slow. Make a nice template, and take a long time on your outline cut, be sure you're completely upright.

And then be really careful on your rail bands.

Good luck dude!

Rocker is everything. Which brings me to the point, that get your bottom flatter than you could ever imagine.

I've got a 3M fairing board, 36 grit. It's dead flat, but cost like 35 bucks, but its really the only specific shaping tool I have other than a finger plane, a fred, and a surform.

congrats on shaping your first board! i myself have been really wanting to shape a board myself. and, i was sorta wondering, are there any sorta kits or anything like that that any of you could recommend? it needn't be super expsensive, as a first surfboard would probably come out , not perfect, if ya get me.
allright, thanx for the help!
