Traveling with a surfboard

Is there a cheaper option to traveling with a surfboard on an airplane without having to buy a 100 dollar surfboard bag? Will bubble wrap work? Styrofoam?

A cheaper option would be to buy a $50 board bag!!

But what's the point in trying to save money by not protecting your board properly, only to have to pay for possible major ding repairs and a few days out of the water at the other end.

I use bubble wrap, foam roll and all my clothes and wetsuit wrapped around my board to give my board protection

I've travelled all over the place with 5mm bags.

Just make sure you put plenty of padding aroung the nose, rails and tail.

What I do is cover the board in foam roll and then get bubble wrap and roll into tubes (if you know what I mean) it makes a nice fat cushion to protect the nose.

Use plenty of it and then ram your clothes in for a little bit more protection.

I've never had a dinged board yet!!

I use Pipe lagging for the rails when i've travelled with my board. Cheap option available from hardware stores.

Yeah definately, and like Northswell says, pipe lagging is a good option as well, but make sure it's securely fixed to the rails

Dude, trust me. Just buy the damned bag. I went without a bag for ages and my board paid for it (luckily I had a shitty board that was already dinged all to hell). Boardbags are really convenient if you are travelling, its nice to have something to carry your board, wax, and wetty around in.

I got an epoxy board so it'll probably not ding as badly. Do you know about how much it costs to ship a surfboard on an airplane? I'm flying delta.

Go to their website, my girlfriend is a flight attendant for Air Tran and it ends up being like 65 bucks or so I think...

With Air Tran, you add the length, height and width of the object is in inches. If the number is bigger than like 72 or something like that you have to pay a 65 dollar (or something) fee. So basically if you're packing a board, you're paying.
