Total Newbie looking for some low-key action

I'm going to be vacationing with my family on Sanibel Island (Gulf Coast) in early October. My kids want to see some waves so I'm going to take them to the east coast for a day or two (Ft Lauderdale would be most convenient). Could I expect to see at least small waves (2-3 ft) if I came. When would be the best time to come?
