Re: Anyone surfed Papua New Guinea
Let's give you a little information re malaria, stuff that might help; check a few thing with your doctor about this too.
There are different types of malaria, all are not nice and one, Falciparum can be fatal: The mosquitoes are most active around dawn and dusk ( true) but don't depend on that, long sleeves and long trousers at those times help, anti insect lotions and creams very helpful DEET ingredients, mosquito coils to make smoke, just don't burn your accommodation down. Most important mosquito net make sure you use it!!
There are other mosquito borne diseases, dengue fever, typhus, encephalitus to name a few, all nasty, so the best advice is to avoid being bitten. BTW you will not see a malaria mosquito they are too small!
Now about anti malarials yes they can be nasty and yes they don't not always work, they basically lessen the risk of contracting malaria, not prevent it!
A lot of malaria is now resistant to quinine and quinine type drugs so telling your doctor where you are going will help them prescribe the correct thing.
Doxycyclin is an antibiotic that stops the malaria parasites setting up in your blood, you start taking it before going and for some time after coming back ( and that Is important) it can make your skin photosensitive Easier to sunburn ( who needs that in the tropics) and people can be allergic to it>
Lariam is another but with similar properties as to prevention but has been found to have possible psychotic side effects, hmm.
I survived the fatal malaria in the 70s, absolutely horrifying, I will never go without antimalarials in risk zones!
I've taken up troll hunting just for fun, instead of a rifle I'll just use a pun!
