Is it worthwhile to get a cheaper funboard?

I started surfing this summer and got completely hooked. My friend needs his board back though so I am looking to get a board for myself. I'm looking for funboards. So used funboards go for about $250 in San Diego and a new NSP 7'6" would cost me about $350-400, and I suppose new ones from Surftech are about $600+. Since I see myself going to surf about 3-4 times a week, is it worthwhile to get a cheaper funboard or splurge out on something better than just a "beginner" funboard?

I would probably just get something used for right now. There is no need to have a really nice high performance expensive board while you are still learning. You will probably just ding it up, as beginners are hard on surfboards, especially fiberglass surfboards. I would get a new board In a year or two when you start ripping. Who knows... with some looking you may find a fairly nice board in the $250. price range.

Good advice, when you are learning a Ferrari or a Rolls is not the vehicle of choice!
There should be some good secondhand fun boards around at a good price

Buy a pop-out epoxy funboard. There is a lot of snobbery amongst surfers, but truth be told they turn fine and will always be good to have for smaller days.

Splurge . . . end of (lighter, useable, manoeuvrable and re-sellable).

[edit = get a custom built just for you . . . four times a week in the waves is plenty to get good on a custom . . . if you need more advice just post back here and we'll help you].

Having more boards is always better than having less of them, take it from a recovering board hoarder that got up to 11 boards. Trust me, if you are wondering, and don't buy it, you will eventually wish you had, so might as well do so now...

It may be late now but u should buy a cheap board. If epoxi even better.
Let it hit the car, the wall of the garage, drag it on the sand or grass, surf it till the fins dig the sand

If u r learning u don't have to waste time and money taking care of a tool that will
never have enough care from you.

And as u learn, u may also want to go for a shorter or longer one. That's when u will need to talk with a shaper and figure out what is best for u.
Meanwhile, disposable!
