please help me figure out what kind of fins to get for this

Postby pmcaero » Wed Sep 05, 2012 12:28 am

I got this board real cheap, filled all the dings with a repair compound and now I want to get some fins-cheap.
The screw hole is in the front, the length of the groove is 5.5 inches. the distance between the center of the screw hole and the beginning of the groove is about 1/4 inches.
Been looking online, mainly ebay, can't figure out. Nothing looks like it would fit. I wanna spend as little as possible.

The fin boxes look like Future fins system, another wave to check is at the back of the box there should be a little ridge run across the back about 2mm in so when you screw the grub screw in at the front it forms a similar ridge to lock on to the base of the fin!
After that google and ebay for fins. Futures fins or Shapers fin come to mind!
If not try the maker themselves. :D

yeah, they look like future fin boxes. Maybe you can find a used set of future fins on ebay. If not check out http://www.futuresfins.com/index.php

Thanks for the reply guys.
Jaffa, I think I see what you are talking about.
Ok, hypothetically speaking, since this board was 50 dollars and I don't want to spend more than half of that again on fins, plus I already bought the fast curing ding repair kit which seems to work as an adhesive as well...again, hypothetically speaking, don't jump on me ... could I simply take any fins that sort of fit in the boxes and just epoxy them in place?
Thus not having to invest in screws and key?

I think a

is justified

Only if you want to wreck the fins, the fin boxes, and the surfboard.
Otherwise get the right fins - Future fins aren't even all that expensive compared to a lot of brands.

any Future Fin setup would work? I noticed the quad sets are cheaper but the fin base looks different. I guess the question is, are the future fin boxes universal? I can't figure out from their website.

Here is a simple formula FCS fins basically fit only FCS fin plugs, futures are unversal to futures only. The futures lugs fit all futures Shapers makes fins for both futures and FCS, there are other fin systems , but you start to get out into the twilight zone.
There are Chinese elcheapo knock offs and left over fins on Ebay. Try that  >

If you want to do strange things like epoxying fins in permanently, rip out the boxes and use glass on fins.

The pressure that applies to fins in surfing is quite extreme, possible limited success with what you plan
You are going to have some very interesting boards until you get the fin sets right
