do you hate SUPs???

I have been on my sup for the last year getting dialed in on it. Been a surfer for 30+ yrs, and have never gotten in so many arguments while surfing.

I give priority to all prone surfers, I only sup when waves are 3' and below, I generally paddle a dawn, and am gone early to work. I never snake, or drop in.

Do you hate the SUPers...or just the ones who hog waves????

I feel like I am riding an untapped resource when I am cruising a 1' peeler, and no one can even catch it.
Jealousy sucks.

Just wondering if I am a pariah for a good reason.
After 1 year of SUP, I am in the best shape of my life!!!!! Won't ever stop. Surfing is now for when we have waves....SUP is for the rest of the year!!!!

i HATE in this order; SUPs>Long boarders>Boogie Boarders>Knee Boarders>Body Surfers. Shortboarders=Me

You are hated because you have a shown advantage.

Longboarders also rarely respect the lineup. They wave hog all the time( for me at least). As a short boarder, I will be the last one to stand up on the wave, giving me the disadvantage over someone who has to take one stroke and catches the wave. But i my opinion longboards and SUP look very boring, and retarded. I've said before all you can do on a longboard is turn and walk forward, then walk backward and turn and walk forward again....lame.

SUP is in a different class. Stand Up Paddler has a clear view of waves to come, and for me at least, every time i see them they don't respect the lineup. Its true they may be really good or so, just decide to stand up paddle when its 3ft below, but there are more fun boards(in my opinon) like a fish thats an alternative to me, what looks like a very boring sport. BUT You are suring +30years and you may be a little tired or old or whatever excuse can come with being old lol.

And honestly, I think the hostility comes with you having the big dick in the lineup. Most of the time Stand UP Paddlers are seen on either the smallest waves, or the biggest waves. WHY? cause they can see them.

When people just like yourself are experienced and know that the first wave isn't the biggest, they wait it out, then when it does come, in there mind(and mine) I see that a stand up paddler only needs to catch 1ft waves, and so this big wave is for me, regardless of if i drop in on him or not im takn it. And you've probably seen alot of people drop in on you, cause they feel well, if you can catch anything and i can only catch bigger waves, i have priority.

If you want to ease the tension, or somewhat get some respect, dress like a gondolier. Not only is it funny, but people will learn that this is the guy that doesn't wave hog.

if you are surfing 1ft slop i dont really see the problem at all as no one else is gonna really stand much of chance of catching it anyhow. But the stigma you are facing is due to the fact that most Janitors are a menace to the line-up and almost 90% of em have no place being out there. In the same way that a beginner has no place being out on a big day clogging up the line-up and getting into positions that make it dangerous for other surfers. Seems rather silly to be surfing it on 3ft surf anyway as those waves are easily shortboarding / longboarding waves.

By all means surf it on a really small day like 1ft waves - or head out somewhere where no one is out. But i place SUP in the same area as YAK's dont wanna see them on a day when its actually half decent surfable waves. Has nothing to do with jelousy / lack of catching waves. Its because i know most these guys cant really control their craft and if it is actually surfable and crowded even more reason why they shouldnt be out there.

Funny thing is those who hate it the most seem to be the kooks?? My theory is that they are frustrated at the lack of waves they are catching...this may or may not be the stem of some hatred. When I SUP at a break with better surfers I never get complaints.

I do offer priority verbally to any surfer in my space, and also call out sets, and tell if the second wave is better. " I can catch anything so you have priority." The guys who know me will ask me about the second wave before deciding to go on the first.

Being heckled one day I offered the shortboarder my broom, we swapped boards. I picked up a couple waves on his board as he entertained the point by looking very uncomfortable and even falling off on flat water...everyone gained some respect for the difficulty.

Clear advantage??? I have that advantage on a longboard too, must I cripple myself with an under sized board for the conditions to be cool?? I can wave hog on most boards....why would I do it more on my SUP.
After being an ambassador of niceness for the SUPers, I have low tolerance for those who snake me when I am out on my surfboard.

As for surfing it in 3' conditions...if it is 3' (belly to nipple high) on the best set with most being smaller...SUP all the way. Sitting on my tush for ten to twenty waiting for a fun wave??? I can have 10 inside peelers in 20 minutes, and the workout from paddling is 10 fold. I will save my surfboard for when we have waves ( above my nipples...makes 'em erect )

Different strokes for different folks.....but tail drop floaters and round house cutbacks sure feel like surfing to me...dress like a gondolier, or a janitor :roll:

most SUPers i see at the breaks i surf know what they're doing and will give priority when warranted. at my breaks the SUPers I run into are usually watermen in training who've spent their fair amount of time on longboards/shortboards/bodysurfing and are just looking to experience the wave from a new perspective. i know there're kook SUPers out there who hog waves, have never touched any other kind of board, get in the way, and throw fits when you burn them, but that kind of behavior gets corrected once they run into the local regulators.

Wave-hogging on SUPs is bad form I think. Especially on point breaks where everyone is trying to catch one wave.

It's a crowded day but slow and a bit small. A nice rideable wave comes through every two or three minutes. Everybody is positioning themselves on the outside, or the inside. Here comes a perfect one on the outside, several surfers get set to take off along the point, then as the wave begins to crest a Jetski comes tearing down the wave from 25 yards out. Respecting his ride, everyone pulls out. Nice one. The waiting begins again, but about 30 seconds later, you see the Jetski cruising back to the optimal take-off point, once again about 25 yards deeper than everyone else. The next perfect wave, here he comes again...

So you have a choice: Cut off the guy riding a log or kayak or Jetski mach 10 right at your head, or keep the peace and let him catch 90% of the waves.

That's what it's like with wave-hogging SUPs in the lineup.

I actually would like to weigh in on this in a few aspects.
I don't hate SUP boarders, but I am super wary of them. So far I have only seen maybe 4 good SUP boarders. I have physically pulled one from the ocean and had to give CPR on the beach. If you came out to the line up beside me, you would have friendly conversation and be presumed competent until you disproved that theory.

I've only met 1 SUP guy that actually surfed out of the lineup with us, he was cool. For some reason all our local guys go to Pismo, there are some spots that are as good if not better that are always deserted. I rarely ever see other surfers, so when I do I'm a lot less likely to have issues. There are plenty of waves for everyone and getting past the break alone is enough competition for me lol.

Much like Lomax, It cracks me up on small days when the surf is erratic with rideable sets every 5 minutes because the guy out back on the SUP catches the wave so early, cruises in on it and then has a few minutes to get back out to the same spot, paddles out past the line-up and the process starts all over again leaving very little for anyone else.

I have solidly been on the sup for a couple years now....quite addicting for a wave junkie!!
I may need methadone to get back on my surfboard!! I have really become hooked on the fitness and fun.
Living in socal there is still quite a stigma with sup, even having life guards removing them from breaks entirely. I am not worried. I am still getting 10 times the waves I ever have in my life...feeding my addiction daily!! My home spot has now become quite nice for me...the locals have all realized that I am not going anywhere and they were afraid to make me....so now when I show up it is all smiles and hand shakes. Everyone knows me as "paddleboard Parry"...probably end up on my grave if thing keep this way....don't see change soon!
My quiver has grown to 3 sups now 12' 11' 10'...eyeing a 9footer now...will be a while before I pull the trigger on a 4th. Hard to hide those thing from the wife!

I am on a 10/0 for now and loving the maneuverability in the surf.

I am currently on vacay in Oahu, and I have had an eye opening experience with the sup.
Seems like at the decent waves here everyone can surf. I mean really surf, like better than most everyone at home! These guys recognize that you are respecting the line up. I have had no bad vibes or comments on the sup. On the contrary I have made a couple friends in the water and gotten some tips on where to line up for the sets. Really happy with the maturity of the Hawaiian people in the water. They police the water as surfers. There is no problem. If I were to step out of line I am sure I would be told quick.

I am a wave surfer, but I stand most days while catching them.

One of my favorite thing to do is offer the sup to someone complaining about my advantage...even the best surfers are humbled when they try it...usually after I catch my second wave on their board they are over the sup.

generally I haven't been bothered by suppers much. More bothered by guys who decide to surf the entire length of the beach just because they can.
I feel suppers stay offshore of where I catch my waves. And it helps that some are babes in bikinis

I mean, someone who is a good surfer and can control their board to extend their ride should also be mindful that they are on a crowded beach with a lot of beginners, boogie boarders and people just wading in the water. So if you decide to turn almost parallel to the shore, you will be cutting off several clueless kooks - like me - or nail some poor kid in the water.
It's a state beach, there's no such thing as a line-up, or there are ten line-ups if you want, so just go in a direction that assures an empty path to the beach.

I actually bumped with a SUP yesterday, the guy didn't say anything and then he went to SUP a bit farther off, still felt uncomfortable just watching him because he was getting close to all the people wading in the water.

I don't have a problem as long as we don't collide and we keep our distance but if we collide than we have a bit of a problem. I hate the skimmers the most in my opinion.
