materials determining

Hi everyone!

I am quite new in all the surfing world and I have a doubt.

Once I made a ding in my surfboard and went to a shop to buy some sun-repairing paste. In the shop they asked me which material was my surfboard made of, and I had to show the board as I didn't know it.

Could anyone help me with tips for determining the material that the surfboard is made of? both the foam and the surface... or is it written with any code in the surfboard? there is some code that i don't know what it stands for under the shaper and measures line...

There is no code, it will usually say EPS or Epoxy on it somewhere, if not it usually is fiberglass.

However, instead, give us the name of the maker and approximately how old it is, or better yet, post a pic of the board

ok, it doesn't say EPS anywhere i think... i will take a pic and upload it as soon as i can (i am pretty busy right now).

meanwhile.. it is a Simon Anderson 1.5? (i bought it second hand) year old board

i would like to know, not only what material is it, but how you decide it (colour, brightness...) so i can do it myself from now on. And btw, when i upload the picture, if you can help me with the rest of the code it will be perfect!

I'm sure there was a recent thread discussing identification of epoxy vs polyester surfboards. I haven't got the ability on my phone to find it, but as I said the last time: polyester boards usually allow you to see the stringer because the resin is clear. Epoxy boards use pigmented resins, so you can't normally see the stringer, but there may be a stringer painted on the oustide in some cases. This is generally the case, but there may be exceptions, like painted polyester boards, or clearcoated Epoxy.

As for the "code": it isn't a code on hand-shaped boards. There is usually the length, width and thickness handwritten on the underside near the stringer, and the signature of the shaper.

On mass produced boards you might find a model number that is only meaningful to the manufacturer.

The clue is in the foam. Unless you can see the foam it's almost impossible to tell for sure. EPS is the type of foam used for packaging almost everything that comes in cardboard boxes. I am sure you will have come into contact with it outside of the surfing world. When you break it or rub it loads of little balls of the stuff come off. If your board is clear coated you can see through the glass if the foam is made up of these balls as the shaping process cuts through the balls and leaves visible circular cuts through the balls. Quite distinctive. This is the type of pattern you are looking for.

so mine should be a polyester surfboard, as I can see the stringer. And once I had a ding in the tail, no small balls of foam went out of it.

actually its not quite that simple. An EPS foam board can only be glassed using epoxy. However a pi foam board most likely like yours can be glassed using either epoxy or polyester resin. its probably polyester.
