The annual local Mal contest was held over the last weekend. The surf was so small that even the longboards were struggling.
I went out to improve my performance with the water camera and I have to say I'm getting a little better.but only some at this stage two offerings, one a landscape scene setter
water mal.JPG

The next was where I was starting to be able to home in on the action
Water toes.JPG

I went to shore as the action shifted from bank to bank as the tide changed so rather than redo setting for each bank I shot these ones from shore.

Have a look at the dynamics of footwork in each of the nose riding shots and the positioning of the mouth most essential in nose riding.
Nose step.jpg

The next shot shows how dynamic the stepping can be and cross stepping is more balanced than a shuffle
Hairy legs.jpg

The surf was very small ( rated underhead) an so to get the feeling of it being overhead there was only one thing too do!
Coffin fit.jpg

My results in the contest were elimination in the first heat and repercharge heat. Too small for the Jaffa, I couldn't buy a wave     So I shot everybody with my canon

Thanks for posting Jaffa, some really good shots there.

That shot pictures if perfectly. You can see it, but to a lesser extent, in the photo above (where he's about to ride up the beach?).

And thanks for posting them in the main gallery. I realise this is a pain but it should be automatically if / when the change happens.

Hey Jaffa, nice shots :)

What's the focal length of the shots in the water?

Morning Dtriple B, The water shots were taken with an Olympus Muj1030SW tough on auto settings inside a water housing.
full shot details ISO 80 focal 11.80 mm at F/6.3 1/320 and another 1/400 at 10.30mm.
Then some cropping for the closer of the two.
The problem with the Olympus is that if you are shooting in bright light you can't see you picture in the LCD screen.
also unless you get the program right there is also a time lag in getting the shot, which means without anticipation you get a different shot from what you planned
It will be a little while before I upgrade to a more reliable system for the water shots I'd like to shoot what I'm pointing at :D
I am however getting better at using what I've got :D

Great pic Jafa! Also for around 800$ I would recommend the Canon T3i. I've been using it for a couple of months and I love it.

Thanks Irationmon68
Good advice and i have it covered the camera I spoke about is my water camera my land is an EOS550D and lenses up 400.

I will eventually get a custom water housing but a good one costs as much as the camera, so a little saving up is needed , there is an ultra fast lens which will be the super achiever in my camera.

I have a way of working these things, I work to produce the best shots I can with what I have and them if I think they at good I reward myself with progressively better equipment.
Learn and earn sort of. Doesn't dent the Credit card as much that way

I favor Canon because I have high end printers and work off a Mac platform and I sell quite a few prints up to A3 in size for upgrade money :D

Shoot a few with your canon and post love to see them :D

On specs alone, they all are reasonable some things to consider in your choosing if these are what you want.

They will not do good land based shots if it zoom based however the higher the optical zoom the better, using digital the more you use it the more possible pixelation.
This can offset a little by high megapixel ratings.
Check for shooting lag too in the sports stating and on selected manual settings.
If you are planning to shoot in the water, go for deeper water proof or water resistance, 1 and 2 meters is more likely to let water in under surf conditions, luckily some have optional water housings and for the lucky there are marine bag systems at a lesser price.

Other things I found the LCD screens are hard to see in surf light so a little view finder is helpful but they seemed to have vanished of camera bodies.

I suggest a silicon grease to seal the various plug in points, lids and the battery slot.

My olympus Muji tough is one of these and it is capable of producing some good shots, all of those above have a good chance of giving you a capable entry level water shooter but read the fine print

There are several ways you can go about posting "random" photos, put them in where they fit a topic, and they fade away as the topic moves down the line, or post your photos in the photos segment I and an album grows under your avatar there.
You could also start a random thread like I did with the goof photos , so far I'm the only one shooting goofs.

You can also post them against the spot where it was taken on the surf map. They are then linked to that spot, and will appear in the main photo section at http://www.surfing-waves.com/your_wave_pictures.htm
