How to tie multiple surfboards on car racks?

Postby andrew161 » Tue May 15, 2012 5:31 am

hello guys. I can't seem to find anything on this. how do i tie at least two surfboard on my car racks? Boards are a 5"10 and a 6"1. i drive about two hours on the highway to get to the beaches with waves. Is it safe to have more than one surfboard tied while driving at 65 mph? somebody should post a video on youtube i'm sure it would get a lot of views.

BIg board on bottom other on top. Occy straps OK but can twang off when a big truck passes too close going the other way.
I use two Self locking ratchet flat straps one at back and one at front, there are even some with a key lock with added wire inside they are great I make sure there is no slap or movement as long as the roof doesn't pull off the car you're good.
Look in the surf magazines they advertise stuff like this.

Hi andrew161, welcome to Surfing Waves!

Yes, stack them on top of each other. Don't go more than 6 high :-D
You can always drive a little slower than 65.

As previous posters said, big board on bottom smaller board on top. Also in case you didn't already know - fins up and towards the front of the vehicle. I put a couple of thin foam pads between the boards for some cushioning. 2 flat locking straps snugly around the whole thing, with some padding where the straps contact the boards to prevent pressure dings. Put a twist or 2 in the straps to prevent them from buzzing/whistling at highway speeds.

Like this, despite SP's advice about not going 6 high! Then have one of these  or two and go round a roundabout 5 times.

That's the van themathteacher uses to transport his boards to and from his warehouse.
