I'm sure big wave surfers everywhere will welcome the arrival of kayakers into the lineup. 
I couldn't work out whether he was getting towed into the waves, or just towed out.

hmmm.. the guy says he thought, "What's next?" But, claims he couldn't think of anything so he is retiring from paddling. I'd have said, "Bigger waves as big as surfers ride. Or, use an SUP. Or, learn to surf the proper way."
