Groyne destroyed my fish

Hey guys I've had this 6'3 epoxy fish for about a month and its been fantastic, I took it out the other day when it was a solid 8ft not big for most of you I'm sure but for me it was amazing. However I smashed it on a groyne and the nose is now pretty wrecked. I have no idea how to repair it and can't really find much help browsing Google.

Ouch. thats a pretty hefty hit. have you kept the other bit that snapped off or has it completely dissapeared. if you still have the other end, i would(bearing in mind it wont look good but it might work) epoxy the nose back on, and then get a load of P38 filler, or maybe some solarflex, and basically dip the whole lot in, let it dry and then reshape using plenty of sanding paper. when you get down to a nice finish use very fine wet and dry sandpaper. this will keep it water tight and give you a nose.

now if you dont have the bit that broke off its more tricky. you could maybe reconstruct one out of balsa wood and glue it on. it depends how much you love your board, and whether or not you want lots of work to do. but the easiest thing to do i think without the nose, is to cut it off flat at an angle. / like that but much shallower, and then reconstruct a blasa wood nose and glue in place, and then use filler, or solarflex, or some other form of material. you could use epoxy resin with glass fibre.

im not a surfbaord repairer, but if it was mine this is what i would do with my board. other people may advise differently. some might say get a new board or get it professionally repaired, but these can cost a lot of money. i paid £50 just to get an FCS plug glassed in and for my board to be dried out. but he did a very good job i must say.

the choice is yours. things to consider are, time and cost, as well as how good you are with DIY materials and tools. it can be done, but it will take some time.

very helpful thanks tj, yeah i lost the nose section, pretty annoying but all part of surfing! don't apologies for a long message its exactly what i hoped for! I will do some research into those materials.

Ouch, nasty bit of damage there! Your board will never be quite as good as before but there may be options to repair it.

I have never repaired a damage of that severity, but you could try obtaining some pourable polyurethane foam to fill in the nose, and reshaping it yourself. You would have to laminate it which would be a hassle to do well, but potentially rewarding. If you decide to go upon this route, the finish of the polyurethane foam is highly variable and my have small holes (gas pockets); whisk up a resin + microball solution and smear it over the surface to make it even.

Whatever you do, stand the board on the nose for a few days to a week beforehand, and if possible tape a few bits of tissue paper to the bottom to wick away any moisture.


I hate to say it but this may be one for the pro's. Take it to a repair place and ask for a quote, the amount of materials involved to DIY may mean it is cost effective to get it done professionally. (That said, you could build up a good collection of materials for future dings if you do it yourself ).

Hate to say it the repair cost may make it a write off, I don't know enough about epoxy stuff to really advise you.
Only thing that could have been worse would be a fish destroying your groin, sorry, but that comes to mind.

Yeah, the more I look at it the more depressed i'm getting, there is no way I can fix this myself, I don't have the materials or steady hand to pull off a procedure like this. Will get a quote from someone who is capable, really hope it isn't a write off though, I love this board and its so damn new. Cheers for all your help.

To follow on from my last post hope the new year gets it fixed.

Jaffa let's hope with global warming the Pacu fish doesn't decide to migrate south to Australian waters . At least down here we will know it's coming from you mainlanders before it gets here . We may have to start wearing the old cricket guards into the surf

Crikey Jaffa that is creepy as hell, I have never seen teeth like that on a fish! I thought it was fake until I google'd "fish teeth" and came up with some nasty looking results.

I pray it never makes it Europe, particularly British waters

Just a little further off thread but apparently they were imported into new Guinea waters from the Amazon to increase fish stocks. The Amazon Pacu fish is vegetarian and eats nuts that fall into the the river ) hence the crushing/grinding teeth. The fish changed its habit and in New Guinea became carnivorous and eats well,.....nuts :shock:

Holy xxxxx! The teeth are outrageous! I'm glad this happened to my board and not to my balls. Thanks for the heads up I won't be heading to New Guinea any time soon.

On the bright side, my board is being fixed, will post the finished product soon.

Dude; If you surf 8ft near groins and this is how close you get and you can't fix then you are spoofing this website !
