Wheres best in Cali for a beginner to learn in December?

Hi i'll be coming to California for a week in December. Where would be a good place for a beginner to learn? San Diego? Long Beach?

San Diego, but do you know where you are staying? They are not exactly withing minutes of each other.

San Onofre State Beach (Old Mans) on the north end of San Diego County
