Short Boards are a lot more unstable when you jump from prone position to standing and because your used to more surface area of a long board you are probably popping up the old way - you may even be in the wrong position on you board. First get your position right on the board in order to pop up, when you do pop to your feet, look up, eyes up - stay in this position in a low crouch and make sure you have caught the wave before standing up. Leg strength and stability work may also help.
