progressive or traditional

we appear to be letting our longboard only forum die here lets have a discussion-progressive or traditional?

im firmly in the traditional way of thinking, but progressive moves on a longboard can look cool. what do you think?

for me - traditional all the way. You can't beat the glide that comes from having a traditional, heavy board under your feet. Much bettter to get the toes to the nose too. For me even side fins are cheating!!! Watching a real master cross-stepping up and down the board is so graceful and elegant - you never get that sort of beauty coming out of other surf styles really.

Having said that, on bigger days, it's pretty hard going on a big old log.... That's what impressed me on Singlefin Yellow with Bonga Perkins taking the big, heavy, Tyler Singlefin out at Pipeline I think it was. Just mental!!

my next board will be a heavy glassed traditonal single fin been looking at the Takayama step deck or maybe the model T for thos knee to sholder high waves some thing i can get my toes on the nose and drop knee turns

so i would go with tradinal for sure

just wondering what is he price tag from a shaper for say an average longboard nothing fancy with no fancy spray job for a 9 ft board
? ( i know you cant get completely accurate price because every shapers diffrent and so on...) cheers

£400 maybe shop around mate best bet is to go in the surf shops around you in cornwall and see what they have for offer

also worth checking out the shapers factorys as well you normaly find boards alot cheaper from there than off the shelf at some surf shop as they mark the price up to make more profit

so nobody from the progressive school of thinking then, damn i was hoping for a fight (kidding) ive got some surf video somewhere with a bit of joel tudor saying if you want to surf like that, get a shortboard, its easier, which seemed to make good sense.
when i was getting my board there were 2 in the shop in my size and price range-same shaper and stuff, one was traditional style, one was progressive style, and out of me, the salesman and my dad nobody was dissappointed that i chose the traditional one. im deffinately not.
i was expecting a progressive longboarder here though.

if i lived some where like the north shore or austrlia where they get big consistant ground swells then i might ride a progesive board but we get so much small inconsistant surf here its pointless becuse it rarely gets big enough

i will take you on as all forms are good
i have a 6'8, 9'1 and 9'3 (short, progressive long and progressive noserider)
all forms of riding rock - i wish i could afford many more different styles of boards, a fish, a twin, an egg, a mimimal (i had and 8'6 and it rocked), short, gun, 10', 9'etc......
i live near bells beach in vicco, australia and there are waves to suit every board and every level of surfing
cross stepping, knee drop turns, long nose rides all are awesome and graceful and reos, floaters, cuttys and barrels are awesome too - they are all totally different and all have an awesome part to play
