Funboard or Fishboard for beginners?

Im new to surfing, and I am in the process of choosing a funboard or a fishboard. I hear both are good for beginners, and Im looking to surf smaller to medium sized waves, and I hear funboards and fisboards are both good for that. But I want to be able to turn and manuever more and go fast, and the funboard cant do that, I think. and the fishboard can do that. what should I get?

Whoever you're talking to about boards, punch them in the mouth a couple of times, and then go and talk to someone else.

Try learning first, get a board on which you can learn the basics. Your first experience will tell you exactly where you are in the foodchain.
Answer is funboard the rider determines speed.

Definitely go funboard or even go longboard. I bought a cheap soft top to start out on, 8 footer it was great, although I was ready to upgrade to a "real" board quickly. I hit three different shops in the area, and got three different responses. One said 6 1/2 foot fish, 2nd said 7 1/2 foot funbord, 3rd said to go with a longboard, 9-10 feet. The guy in the shop telling me to go with a fish was very convincing. I asked him several times if I'd get frustrated on it, and he swore I wouldn't.

Anyway, some friends talked me out of it (love the reply about punching the guy inn the mouth, BTW) and I have since bought a longboard that I'm loving.

The idea of the fish kept gnawing at my brain, so I went and rented one this weekend. NEVER HAD A SHOT! It was actually pretty funny. The lack of stability was killing me. Couldn't paddle. Couldn't get out to the lineup, was basically getting my butt kicked.

That's my two cents on the fish vs. Fun argument. Good luck!!!

How much do you weigh? Although some may not agree, getting a king fish is actually a lot of fun for a begginer, but not the intended purpose. For example, if you buy a 6'10" retro fish it paddles and is stable about the same as a 7'6 funboard but is way more fun to ride.

But yes, if you buy a fish meant for your size and you are a begginer it sucks, much like a shortboard would be.

Rent one and see if you can catch any waves. Talk to a surf shop and see if they will give you a weekly deal so you can try out several boards. Find the one that suits you and buy it. I am still trying different boards(around 20 so far) but so far i am getting a 7S superfish X-2.
