Where to Longboard in UK ?

Where is the best place to start out Longboarding in the UK ?

where ever there are waves....longboards are nice to start out on smaller waves and work your way up, but if you have any break near you, then it will have it's day in the right conditions....sandy beach breaks i find are nice

Saunton sands (in Devon) is supposed to be a good longboarders wave. I have only surfed there on a 6'6, and didn't really take note on the wave type. They were very mellow though.

Edit > it is also very picturesque and has good beach facilities (car park, shower).

Yeah, rickys right, saunton sands, putsbrough, woolacombe all good for longboards esp on the small days as they are less busy, stay clear of croyde tho, as thats where all the others seem to hang out and MAN it gets busy in a small bay.
the others mentioned are on nice long beaches so you can walk alittle way down and find a spot of your own to stay clear all others

I wouldn't bother with Saunton it is really flat and so the waves lack punch. Putts and Woolacombe are much better in North Devon. Watergate bay in N Cornwall is really nice as well an picks up loads of swell. But to be honest there are loads of beaches in UK fine for longboarding. I've surfed dozens of beaches from Northumberland to cornwall. You could do worse than buy a guide or loook at one of the many on line guides,

Don't listen to mr mcdead saunton is a good longboard wave, the "lack of punch" means it's not really that good for any board smaller than a mal and because it's mellow the paddle out although long is easy for a longboard. in fact it's a very good longboard wave.

agreed with wooly!
nice and slow and due to the longboards picking up so easy...its a nice place to learn especially as it doesnt have a crashing wave and tends to give a nice long ride on a good day.

newport...my frineds just been to Rhossili, said is nice...REALLY long beach, but its getting a pounding atm with these strong westerlys...how ever STORMRIDER says its notorious for a hard paddle out! but the length of the ride might make up for it!

Rhossili bay (through Llangennith to Three Peaks) is my most common surf break. I must stress that it is not good for long rides, sand bars build up making it reasonable, but it is essentially a shore close-out where the swell moves in parallel to the beach.

It is not the best Gower longboard destination, unless it is a small day and other places aren't working. Allegedly it is one of the hardest paddles in Europe, and I can testify for that. Line after line of breakers, although once out it can be a nice beachy.

Yes I re-read it and I think I did Llangennith a bit of a disservice, it is okay.

For a good longboard destination, try Broughton (the beachy above Rhossili bay). It attacks the prevalent swell direction at an angle so sometimes produces peeling waves, although they are always smaller than Llangennith. You could also try Gower reefs, (Sumpters etc), very fickle but can be good when the stars align or four-leaf clovers are found simultaneously in four different locations.

Llangenith on a nice 2-3ft glassy day with a easterly wind is awesome had some really great surfs but been down there plenty of times and just been battered for a few hours by white water after white water but each session i go out in i learn and get a little fitter so its all learning and as a beginer llangenith has bags of space to stay out of peoples way lol

Been for a few nice surfs at Caswell with the longboard but the rest of gower has to be pretty big for Caswell to work also langland is pretty good if you can put up with the local surfers who think they own the beach.

The long left at crantock in Cornwall is a spot Im a big fan of. A lot of longboarders go there too so youll be in good company. I cant wait to get back down there in sept

Yes it is. I live near by. I`m going to try Saunton soon as i`ve only ever surfed in Cornwall.

POLZEATH POLZEATH POLZEEEEEATH! Polzeath, Cornwall, best surfing community you can get, atmosphere is awesome and waves aren't too shabby either. Putsborough is goood, in Devon, as is Woolacombe, just up the beach. Croyde is beautiful in Devon, but Saunton sands has always been lacking a swell when i've been there.

Agreed with Rhossili. Its a nice mellow wave, the paddle out is always managable. Really good for longboarding. Does get steep when the period gets about around 14-15 seconds though. But how often does that happen in Wales?

Also one of the best longboard spots in the country not that far away. Its not a secret but the locals wouldn't thank me for posting the location.

At the other end of the stick, South Bay in Scarborough is very much a good wave for longboards.

I surf the south Rhossili when the swell is big (and/or long period), and it always seems to be mellow. It so mellow that it makes for easy paddling (relatively) but to the point that when the waves are larger than normal they can become extremely difficult to catch. Llangennith and Three Peaks especially get steeper in a big swell on a sandbank but I have never seen Rhossili become steep (in my experience anyway).
