Sydney vs. Melbourne

Howdy folks,

I'm a dutch student and i am planning to study abroad next year. It's most likely that i'm going to Australia.
As the title indicates it's either Sydney or Melbourne. While i'm there I plan to surf a lot. So my question for you guys is which city has the best spots? Where are the waves the highest, and it is season bounded?
I would appreciate your help!

This one's easy - melbourne isn't on the coast.
You'd need to travel an hour or so to get to the spots. Great spots to be sure, but if you want to surf every day, then sydney is the way forward.

Don't rush yet Gup, There are two other surfing cities that might catch your attention if they hold the curriculum for your studies.
There are three Universities in Sydney one with campuses in the west of Sydney, too far, Sydney Uni is right near the centre of Sydney, and Uni of NSW is at Randwick closer to beaches. Where the student accommodation is a bit of a challange either in getting to Uni id you live at the beach or the beach if you live near the Uni.
If courses allow Newcastle or Wollongong might provide some options, but all are better surf/study options than Melbourne with less travel time.
One Important thing don't plan to rely on public transport it's unreliable for any option :lol:

Thanks for helping, i'll definitely look into that!
Do you think that it's feasible if I would have my own car? To surf/study anywhere in Sydney?
And if I would have my own car, are there many other spots besides Bondi Beach to go surfing where it's less crowded?
The thing is that my university has a partnership with one in Sydney. But maybe I can arrange it on my own in say Newcastle.
And yeah my countrymen did a pretty good job on that

You'll need a car.
All the surf spots near the city, from maroubra to palm beach, get really crowded, partiuclarly at weekends. You need a car to escape every now and then. And as Jaffa says, forget about public transport (particularly with a surfboard...).

Australia used to be called New Holland, there is the fine University of New England in northern New South Wales which is a day's drive from the Byron Bay and mid north Coast beaches. There is also the Newcastle region. The Northern beaches of Sydney has Newport.
The off shore islands of New Guinea, New Ireland, New Britain, New Caledonia and of course New Zealand are all about 2 to 3 hours flight from the mainland.
The point of this post ( yes there actually is one), is Australia will be a new experience :!:
