It's obviously seems to be the right place sometimes
Beyond the smartass answer, examine each thing you do successfully , where everything was when you did it, repeat formula, learn it is different as much as the waves differ.
When you react instinctively to what the wave creates for you and all your foot positions enable to do what you want to do, then and only then will you be able to ......................

Doesn't really matter where on the pad you put the foot, as long as it's on the pad. What makes the difference is your pivoting to your back foot, too much you stall, too little you don't snap, and how much you "load" your turn by surfing up and down the wave. I tend to slash my backside and snap my frontside, part of it is that I just got used to not going vertical on my backside too much, just kinda gave up on it, but on my frontside I really go for big "board out of the water" snaps, but mostly cause that is my style of surf.

So, answer, concentrate on your form, pivot back for snap, and go down hard to come back up hard to get more power in your turn.

I'll just quote surfline as they explained it nicely:

Snap or snapback
"A quick, short cutback into the power of the wave. Often used in a steep part of the wave when the quick manoeuvre will keep the surfer in the "power pocket" of the wave. Also used when the wave is too fast to offer a chance to do a full cutback because the wave would pass the surfer by. "

By slash , I presume you mean a re-entry or reo for short? Also known as 'hitting the lip' or 'off the lip'. That's vertical surfing where you point your board at the plunging lip of the wave and perform your top turn in it. One of the most satisfying manoeuvres in surfing!

So to summarise, a snap is a cutback done off the lip. Normal cutbacks are carved on the rail in the slow part of the wave. A snap is a quick 180 turn done high in the wave, and not in the fat section.

I call a snap a vert reo off the lip (hitting the crest of the wave with the 'board pointing straight up to the sky then turning the board and re-entering the wave on the ensuing fresh drop-back-in).

wow do you actually look where your back foot is placed
i never do i just go up and try to do it (always stack)
i guess i should try it your way

You shouldnt have to look where your back foot is it should just feel right when you start the turn.
Basically, when you start your turn shift your weight on to your back foot then the most important thing which most people dont do is to look in the direction you want to go and rotate the trunk of your body. If you dont rotate the trunk of your body the cutback will lack power and it wont wrap around to the pocket.
