Mick,
there is not lots of surf. The ocean is pretty gentle in south Florida. But,there is enough that there are many surf shops.

Some surfing breaks in and just north of Miami
South Beach
Dunes Hotel
Haulover
21st Street

October Water Temperatures
60 to 67F
(15 to 19C)
This is warm enough and the air temperature is warm. Most surfers will not use wetsuits. Be prepared to wear long sleeve rash guard and shorts for some warmth, if needed. Can get at any of the surf shops below.

Some Miami surf shops that you should know about. One rents standup paddle boards. If there is no surf, then rent one of these.
Liquid Tube Surf Shop
713 71st Street
Miami Beach, FL 33141
(305) 868-1559
(surf board rentals and surf report on telephone)

F1RST SURF SHOP
40 South Pointe Drive
SUITE #107
Miami, FL
(Located in the shops at the Continuum across the street from Nikki Beach)
(305) 397-8103
(surf board and standup paddle board rentals)

Impact Zone Inc
401 Biscayne Boulevard
Miami, FL 33132-1964
(305) 374-6528
(think they rent boards)

Mick
you are welcome.
Also consider going south 60 miles to Key Largo for a day of snorkeling at John Pennycamp State Park.
http://www.floridastateparks.org/pennekamp/ (this is the State of Florida website. you can google many more)

The water is always warm, the sun usually shines, and you'll see all kinds of critters in crystal clear water
