good affordable maui shaper

hi,ill be buying my first custom in maui at the start of the summer. id like to know if anyone has any experience with a good shaper with reasonably priced boards? ive surfed fun shapes until now, the shortest a 7 2, would it b a bad idea to switch to a short board for my first custom?
