On my long board it has a 2 + 1 setup bet recently i have been riding it as a single fin. i have found that the turning of my board has become alot more responsive since.

could anyone tell me what the advantages of a 2 + 1 is meant to be over a single fi nand vice versa

The side bites stabilize the board on hollow, fast and clean waves. With the side bites on, move the center fin forward to loosen the log up. (I keep mine all the way forward). In soft mushy waves take them off, due to the increased drag and bump the center back an inch or two.

Experiment, give each setup a chance (just dont try it once) One setup will work better in smaller mushy surf and another in larger steeper surf. Its what ever works best for you and what your style is.

Not a fan of the side biters....single fin turns great more flow and just the right amount of looseness.
As for the comment of forward for loose and back for more drive/bite. True on both 3 and 1 fin set up...I do disagree about moving the fin all the way up with the 3 fin set up...on the boards I have tried this with I have found the drag a to much. I likened that set up to surfing on mashed potatoes. For a 3 fin set up I recommend all the way back to center max forward. You need a triangle to flow the water through, all the way up no good for me.
I recommend trying a smaller fin 7.5-8 near the back of the box as a single...you will be stoked with the flow and responsiveness. Keep the thruster on the shortboards.

hi thanks for the reply just bought a 7.5 inch cut away going to try this out hopefully this weekend and before i did the movign the center fin which has helped

Fins are like fine wine very much a matter of taste in what you are trying to do on a wave. The arcs of the turns will be different in a single fin to a thruster configuration
When I am riding small but shapely waves I often ride single gives me a smoothness through the turns but I use a deeper fin so if I do lay it over for a big one I've still got fin contact, a true thruster configuration of three equal smaller fins ends up sliding out on the inside rail. So I don't use the thruster style at all! My style kept breaking the tail free in the bottom turn, so bigger centre.
If I want to punch vertically I use three fins a deep centre and either C drives or the futures vectors for that extra bit to go more angular.
Sometimes the systems cannot cross in one board and surf so a choice between cruising Rolls Royce or zappy sports car needs to be made.
Don't be worried about changing your equipment and how it's set up, it's all part of the FUN.

i recently tried the single fin set up, and felt a big difference in turning the board..made my board easier to manuever.. il try to buy a bigger center fin next time..
