Mellow breaks in Santa Cruz/Half Moon Bay?

Hey everyone. I've lived in the Bay Area for a while and have been skateboarding all my life. For a while now I've been really itching to start surfing. That said, I was hoping someone could suggest a mellow, good beginner's spot in Santa Cruz, Half Moon Bay, etc. I mean "mellow" both in terms of the locals policy and break. Thanks a lot in advance!

38th Ave, Santa Cruz, but not when big in winter. And not the Hook which is located very nearby 38th Ave. Another good place for beginners is Manresa State Beach a little bit south of Santa Cruz. You might find you'll enjoy Pacifica, CA and/or Bolinas, CA, too.
