OK, a few more pics of the top, unfortunately it didn't come out as well as I'd hoped, with some of the paint bleeding through the masking tape. I will be taking some corrective action though!

This is frecking awesome!! Great job.

As for paint bleeding between the masking tapes, I maybe able to offer some advise - I used to build model cars and mask paint a lot.

A technique for a clean mask line, is to coat the base color on the mask, then do the blend color.

So to break it down in steps:
- You first spray your base color coat.
- Let it dry and apply masking tape.
- Now, use the base color, or a clear coat, lightly go over the edge around the masking tape.
- Let it dry.
- Apply the blend/ top coat color to your liking.
- Let it dry and peel off the masking tape to get a perfect edge.

What this process does, is to create a seam between the masking tape and your top coat, using your base coat color. And it usually works perfect.

I think one of the problems is that it took so long to get the masking tape on, then cut the design out, then paint, that the '3 hour' limit for the masking tape was passed and it got too tacky, taking some of the base colour off, it then bled too in some areas.

I will try your approach next time, I can see how it would work. I'm going to try and touch it up as it is, but if I can't I'll probably sand the top down and start again!

Can you use a modellers razor to trim and scrape the bleed to perfection ?

Yeah, I offer this advice because I am (as far a I am aware) the only person on the planet who is totally confident in changing the graphics on Carbon Fiber surfboards!

I have a photo documented example that took a week of daily continuous graft to achieve – a week! It takes less then this to build the dam thing in the first place :shock:

.... other than printed graphics, I think you will always run a risk of bleed if you apply ‘flowing’ colour to any surfboard

Thanks for that, I've been Sinister Penguin since 1995 - going on chat rooms at university!! I spent ages thinking of a logo and I have to say I'm quite pleased with the SINISTA thing! I was messing about on some 'design your own clothing' sites and came up with some awesome hoodies!!

IMHO : I'd move the head closer to the tip of the board and loose the feet

I didn't have the feet in the original design if you look, but it looked like something was missing from further down, so I put them in.

Do you think I should sand it all back on the top and start again, moving the head etc? It took so flaming long and if it turns out similar, I'll be gutted. I'm tempted to try and just touch this one up, then when I get around to shaping a proper board, get some proper printed graphics made up and lay them under the glass!?

Sand it back? ! - Nooooo, this is a keeper for sure - first one ! Well done !

You can easily move the head using the photo and the computer, in paint or something, to see what it looks like in a different position.
The feet - they'll be covered by the deck grip I reckon so although excellent, maybe not really worth it unless you make some wall hangers (?).

Printed graphics are definitely a goer in my book - so much easier and no bleeding ! (practice using tissue and scraps of 'glass and resin first to get some experience of laying the graphics up).

I've started touching this up with a touch up pen and it's working quite nicely, tidying up the lines etc! Hoping to finish it this week!

The touching up is done, the clear lacquer is on - guess that means it's finished!! Now to try it!!
