i got a sneaky little nose ride on my 7ft 6 minimal yesterday .did a bottom turn then straightend up a bit and felt the wave and me losing power so i shuffled up u the board a little bit then a little bit more and some more and just went fo it and found my front foot about 3 inches from the end then i shuffles back to my normal postion ,didnt last long but it did feel good !

surfing isnt all about speed if i wanted speed from a wave i wouldnt ride a longboard

Hmmmm - I have to disagree. I think that noseriding is without doubt one of the finest examples of control of surfboard possible.

Also - the speed that can be achieved on a board is to a large extent dictated by the wave. Having a surfboard that contantly wants to charge way ahead of the curl just doesn;t make sense.

Surfing in total balance and harmony with the wave, with the board in perfect trim means that you are traveling at exactly the same speed as the wave without any need for corrections in weight distribution or stance.

Hmmmm - I have to disagree. I think that noseriding is without doubt one of the finest examples of control of surfboard possible.

Jonny, you misunderstand me . . . a bloke who noserides certainly has to exercise control over his board, and this is more difficult to do on the nose. . . . hence my statement that noseriding reduces control. . . sure it takes skill . . but the skill is being used to control the board from a position which does not encourage good control. In short, noseriding is a feat which reduces board control.

Also - the speed that can be achieved on a board is to a large extent dictated by the wave.

The speed which can be achieved on a wave is determined by the thrust/drag ratio achievable by the board/rider, the length of time available for acceleration, and the skill of the rider. The length of time available for acceleration is partly determined by the wave (but not entirely), and the thrust available is also partly (but not entirely) determined by the wave.

Having a surfboard that contantly wants to charge way ahead of the curl just doesn;t make sense.

A perfect board will have sufficient speed to make any section which it is asked to beat, and also will be able to stall or cut back when required to do so. Having a speed capability does not entail loss of control or an inability to go slow.
My point is that noseriding limits the rider to relatively slow waves and slow sections. . . .I see it all the time . . . a bunch of team riders getting short noserides into oblivion on what they think is a closeout . . when in actual fact the wave is easily makeable when riding a longboard which is designed without sacrificing speed for noseriding demands.

I agree . . . however, while a noserider might look chilled out when on a suitable section, during the course of a wave they spend a lot of time and effort doing exactly the unnecessary corrections in weight distribution and stance which you say is bad! In fact one of the whole points of the longboarding effort is to do as many of these corrections and changes in stance as possible! On a purely functional longboard most of this effort is saved and control is exercised with far less physical action and much more functional results . . . and on top of this the board has more speed available for the inevitable and frequent occasions whenthere is a fast section to beat.

Longboards have superior speed capability (compared with shortboards) in many surfing situations . . . . if they are correctly designed for speed.
