Board size

Hi, I am a new surfer...I was wondering what type of board I should get, I was thinking of a softboard since many people suggest those. I am 5 ft and weigh 107 lbs, should I get a 5'8 or a 6'4 surfboard? Thanx a lot...

i think if you can you should rent a board if you can first. It depends which break you go to. Its much easier to start with a longboard thats at least 3 ft taller than you. I only know of longboards having soft tops. If you are good enough you can try a shortboard but most people struggle with a shortboard when starting. I highly recommend to rent a board or buy a cheap used longboard at first.

Thanks for the advice, but I think that where I will go there are no places to rent a board, so I was looking for somehting that I wouldn't really "outgrow" like a softboard...is it really too difficult to start with a shortboard?

Unless you have superb balance at the start, shortboards are a lot harder to ride and paddle on if you dont have experience. Indo boards are great to help with your balance. Also, what is a softboard, a board that has a soft top? If youre referring to that I only know of longboards having that. Theres should be some places that carry used boards for cheap. I seen some as low as 30 bucks. If you want to start with a shortboard, personally I just think its more of a challenge. Its like learning how to drive with a manual Dodge Ram 1500 instead of an automatic Toyota Corolla. Its up to you. With practice you should be able to shortboard well as long as you try. At least you arent a big person. If you get a shortboard I recommend maybe a 6'4" or higher all the way up to 7' for a beginner.

One more thing...I started with a longboard with the intention of switching to shortboard. I never made that switch and I dont think I ever will. Now I love the longboard even though many people my age dont surf longboards.

Hi, need a bit of advice...

Been surfing for 4 months on a 6ft 6 foamie. Mastered everything on that board, can stand quick and easy, turn as much as you can on a foam board and can catch failry big waves. Now Im wondering what size I should go to for a fibre glass board. Ive seen a JS Board (Second Hand) 6ft 4" for 400 dollars (AUS) and Im wondering whether its a good deal? And if I should get a board that size...?

Im not familiar with foam boards but if you can ride anything thats 6'6" you shouldnt have too much of a problem with a fiberglass board the same size. Im not familiar with Australian currency either but I wouldnt pay more than 400 US dollars for a NEW shortboard. Since its used I would guess it would be much less.

On avergae, a new shortboard in Australia would be 600-900 dollars, and you could easily pay more...
