Postby Surfer<3Wife » Thu Nov 06, 2008 11:11 pm

Looking for a full wetsuit for my husband, for Christmas, what do you all suggest? Brands? Certain Styles?

We live on the East Coast of Florida.

Thanks in Advance.

What is the water temp, that will determine thickness.....3/2 mm is good to the mid/low 60's. Fit is more important than brand.

A local surf shop should give you the low down for your area.

Support your local shop!!

well, whatever you go for, dont get one with seams across major moving parts, i.e. armpits, knee.

Buddy has one like this, and uh... he complains about chafe all the time. No seams around moving parts is a must.

I just bought a wetsuit, and here is what the guy at the surfshop told me. He sent me into the fitting room with three wetsuits, one from Billabong, one from Ripcurl, and one from Quicksilver. He told me to try them all on, and that chances are one would jump out at me as the one that fit the best. He was absolutely right. After trying all three, it was obvious that the Quicksilver suit fit the best, was the most comfortable, and gave me the greatest range of motion. I bought the suit, took it out for a test run the next day, and it was brilliant.

So, my suggestion is to get your husband a gift certificate to your local surf shop, then go with him and have him try several different ones and let him pick the one that suits him the best (pun fully intended) 8)

bought a 3/2 mm oneill yesterday. Fit like a dream, and i'll take it for a test run tomorrow. Just one question, what do you wear in the crotch region (if you wear any protection at all)?

i just wear a boardshort under. I m really lazy taking it off in a towel and making sure my crotch doesn't get shown to the public.

Crazy, that doesn't feel super awkward and bulgy and catchy? That's a trip man I've always just rocked ass-naked under the wettie; sucks for changing if it's cold or if there's lots of people, but...

Can't remember who said it up above, but ditto on the trying out multiple pairs. An excel jumped out at me between quiksilver, o'neill and excel, but they all just fit a bit different and it comes down to what is the best fit for sure. Wetsuit's a tricky one to do as a surprise gift for sure! Good luck!

tried it out today naked underneath and it worked fine. i had a hard time at first trying to work with it, since i'm not used to a wetsuit, it somehow threw off my timing and my reflexes. its a bit more of a workout than just wearing boardshorts alone.

Totally man, for me it felt so much harder to paddle (suit pulling my arms down) and everything was funky... but it stretched out and now it's pretty natural feeling. Also, I think you have to remember that it adds to your weight... anywhere from just a bit to like 10 or more pounds with thicker wetsuits. That's a lot of rubber and water on your carcass...

Free ballin is the only way. Shoot, I stopped buying undies years ago.

as for trunks to wetsuit, a total adjustment. You will get used to the wearing a condom soon enough. When you go back to trunks after getting used to a suit, your ribs will get sore from not having the rubber protector. But it sure feels free.

Wife wanted to do the same thing for me ,,, To be honest would have been pist off if she had got me a suit vs taking me down to my local shop. He probably has an idea of what he wants so a trip to the shop is in order to get the "hand in glove fit". As for what do ya wear under your suit ,, well commando is the way and hell ya love the warm water/air but don't like the RED RIB I get after a session.

Yeah the first time I put my wetsuit on, I thought I had forgotten how to paddle properly. It takes time to get used to it.

The first time I took it off after the winter, I was paddling like a daemon. It's a bit like rocky punching with dumbells for training, and then punching free for the match

Nice Rocky analogy, kamikaze! It's the eye of the tiger, it's the king o' the fight... But to surf like Rocky fights do you need to run around in slow-mo on beaches in short shorts?

No, but if rocky wants to fight like we surf... then he may have to do just that... oh snap!
