Working abroad and Surfing

Postby magicjohnson » Mon Sep 22, 2008 11:18 am

I have decided to take a few months off work and am very keen to go surfing for an extended period. I am keen to go to somewhere cheap with consistent surf. So was thinking somewhere like Indonesia, Central America, South America etc.. My plan is to go for a few months with my longboard and shortboard and try to pick up some work in a bar or a surf shop or something. Has anyone ever done this? How easy is it to get work? Where would I have the best chance to get work (English speaking graduate)? Where do people think the best places are to go and live for a few months? Would love to hear any suggestions.

Guessing you're from UK. I would recommend Sydney, Australia! I spent 8 months down under; surfing almost daily, while working as a waiter (get some pre- experience/CV goodies for this one, or else you might end up washing dishes in the back. Doesn't matter for how long you've worked as a waiter, but the fact that you have will naturally give you a good advantage on other appliers.) Look for something to rent for example in Manly or DeeWhy; public transportation is really good down there, and surfer-friendly.

As for the other places you mentioned; I would bet Brazil, Sao Paulo, would be as good as any! Unfortunately, I haven't been there (yet:p), so can't give you any 1st hand experience, but I've heard it's cheap living and good prices.
