Autographed longboard

My daughter recently bought an autographed Robert August longboard. She found the board, virtually brand new with leash and case for about 350. At any rate, the board was autographed by Robert August on the bottom near the nose with a permanent marker. She wants to use the board and preserve the autograph. I was thinking of taping off the autograph and applying a marine grade varnish over it. Do you think this would work or would another method be preferrable? See pictures below.

whoa. i don't know if i'd even ride that sucker. yeah, it is a surfboard, and it's made for in the water. but robert august is a legend. i wouldn't leave that board unattended anywhere if she does ride it. it's asking to be snatched up and put on ebay. especially if the autograph bit is specially sealed up. that's a hell of a bargain though for what she got

If you are gonna put resin over it DON'T USE MARINE RESIN!! It is often brownish or blue green tinted. Use a finish surf resin . or you could spray clear spray paint.

Don't ride the Robert August board!!!!! That is like taking a basketball that Michael Jordan signed and playing with it!

Well, parrysurf and I have different views. If you want to surf it, do it. Robert is just another man in the world where as you sister is in the same ocean as him. If you want to surf it, do it. If you have a gut feeling whereas you should preserve it, do it.

or you could flog it to someone who would love to have it hanging on there wall for a vast amount of money and by an newboard and still have some change left over

I'd be surprised someone letting that go for $350.

But, you could bring it to a surf shop and have them resin over it professionally.

She found the board in Galveston. Not sure exactly where in Galveston. Maybe even in a pawn shop but not real positive. The board is super nice and it had been used very little. The top has been waxed....of course. But the bottom looks as nice as a brand new board........no scratches at all. I am of the opinion that she should use it if she wants. She surfs very little anyway. I will look into having resin professionally placed over the sig. Thanks for the advice. I will try to post a pic soon.

Here are a few pictures of the Robert August board and the autograph. I really have no way of knowing if the signature is authentic or not. Can anyone compare it to Robert August's signature on something else?. Also, can you enlighten me as to the writing on the stringer? I know the 9' 0" is the length of the board, but I do not know the numbers on the right or the symbol in the center.

I was thinking you could just spray clear spray paint or clear spray varnish.

when I say "ride it" I mean on occasion, in the right setting, and don't take your eyes off it. Don't make it your main stick. I have several "classics" that I ride once a year cuz I get a wild hair. It is fun to know how these babies work.

I'm no expert, but I've seen on those antique shows when people try to preserve or restore items it devalues them.
I would check with a real collector before altering it in any way.

Plus if it is authentic it may be worth way more than you think.
