Surfboard repair

Hi guys just wondering if anyone can give me some tips for applying resin to your surfboard to repair dings and such....

Any ideas ????

2.if your want to do the best job mix the resin epoxy and additive Q yourself.
3.wait about a whole day for it to dry
4.overdo it and then sand it,better to use to much and sand it then too little and have it leak
5.it smells
6.make sure if its a polywhatever board or epoxy board.epoxys can only be used with epoxy but the poly stuf can use both!

Today I had to fix 2 dings that I made to my board for the first time. It personally looks ok, suncure does get really hard quick. I don't see why wait a whole day? I don't think it'll dry more than it can?

Or am I wrong? I might post a picture of my ding repair and ask for comments on it make sure it's good.

and yes it is dry after an hour but if you wait a whole day it has a longer time solidify all the way through

Thats exactly what suncure is for - fix the ding, let it harden in the sun, go back in the water. 10 minutes in strong sunshine will do the job. You'd probably wanna call it lunch break and wait for an hour to be on the safe side, but it certainly doesnt take a whole day.

Suncure is good if you want to fix your board quickly down the beach or in your lunch break but it is not as good as getting the ding fixed properly with the correct resin type for the board.

Fixing your own boards is a good thing but if its a big one and your unsure as to how to go about it get it done proffesionally for the best job.

Polyester resin will NOT stick to an epoxy board just as epoxy resin will NOT stick to a polyester board. Be aware of this when buying a ding repair kit.

well ks it says epoxy or polyester on the bottle so only idiots suffer lol
i just buy the ding all epoxy kit(hence i have an epoxy board) it comes with fiberglass 4oz n all the stuff to mix plus suncure for quick stuff! 19.99 too!

but ks im pretty sure epoxy works on polyester boards too?

Polyester resin does not chemically bond with epoxy resin and vice versa.
You can fix a ding in a polyester board with bubble gum if you want but that doesn't mean its bonded or fixed correctly.
If you have a polyester board then the correct resin to use is polyester not epoxy and the same applies with epoxy, this way your repair will last and not fall apart.

You can buy ding repair that does both epoxy and fibreglass boards, but the bubblegum analogy is a good one. You're basically sticking gum into the ding. Its fine if you need the board that day, but otherwise do it properly.


(Anyone who has recently seen my battered surftech which looks like its got about a kilo of grey bubblegum stuffed all over the nose should, at this moment, keep quiet. Its temporary all right?)

my boar got hit on the nose and after that a brown line appeared in the top towards the middle at the bottom side of the board (breathe) ... i dont know if its just new board paranoia or is it actually worth worrying about ...

i used sun cure and it seems just as solid as my board
epoxy on epoxy
will this last?i used multiple layers and sanded nicely

KS are you sure about the epoxy on poly? I just fixed a bad crease on my merrick with epoxy. I'm almost postive you can fix poly with epoxy, I read it on sways. I actually use epoxy to fix all my dings, I think it is much better than poly.

If its working for you then don't worry. Ive got epoxy and polyester in my workshop and hence always use the right stuff for the job, espcially as polyester is way cheaper than epoxy.
