Maverix Longboards?

I went into Sam's Club the other day and saw that they had some 9' Maverix Longboards for sale. They costs about $366 and looked like any other longboard to me. Anyone have any experience with them and know if this is a good deal?

It will be my first surfboard as well. I can paddle fairly well, I have been bodyboarding for about a year now. The surf conditions around me are usually fairly flat, Ponce inlet mostly (East central Florida). Any other information you guys need just ask. Thanks!

I have never heard of them but for that price and it is a new board I would stay away. Try a google search.

Haha. If people don't get laughed at for soft-tops around here I don't think they will mind a non-mainstream board brand. Thanks for the replies.

I've been reading about them, heavy and you don't make any progression on them right? I really don't want to have to buy a new board in six months, like probably wont haha. Really looking for a board to last 3-4 years, if thats even possible.

i hear ya man, i just ordered my new board after about 9 months.. it was necessary though, if i could go back in time i would of gotten either an 8'0 or up.

now i have a 6'8'' fun/short board (my first) and an 8'6'' in the mail.

wow i just noticed that the sizes between the two boards are the same if you flip it.. LOL any ways.

the site is islesurfboards.com and they have a ton of stuff, but shipping is about $150, take a look at it, i'm not advertising but i've read some good stuff about em and i sprung for the epoxy 8'6'' with a bag and leash. (they come with fins)

Not at all. I don't know why, I was thinking softboard. Can't imagine a softboard in hurricane waves.

The problem with these cheaper popouts. If your gonna surf for a long time you will grow out of them real quick. They are made for beginers and that is it. I have always thought a good second hand board that you can learn on and a board that will let you progress. In other words a board in your quiver for a long time. A board that works well for your local break and not hoping the board you buy on line works. So instead of spending $366 dollars for a board that is going to be good for you a few months go out and double that price and get a board that works for years. So just in case I am right probably in a year you will be spending $700 on a new board or a very good second hand board for much less. Go talk to a "good" local surf shop or a local shaper.

Heck I have an ironing board for sale for $200. Well it sort of looks like a surboard. That's the problem with cheap popouts. They look like a surfboard to a newbie but are just something to stand on and go straight.

I went around yesterday to a few surf shops. Salty Dog only had a used longboard for 500 which was their cheapest one (They had a brand new NSP board for 550 but I'm pretty sure its a pop out as well, a lot of surfers have them around here though) and Maui Nix(sp?) had a used longboard that they didn't have a price-tag on haha. I even asked the guy if he could look it up and he came up with nothing, gave them my number and hopefully they will call. The guys at Salty Dog sounded like the knew their stuff, but it was out of my price range for a used board. Only about three shops that actually sell boards here, one was closed.

I know you may not be able to spend a lot of money and that is ok. You have to work with what you have and I understand. Lets see if I can make this simpler.

$366 for a cheap starter board that you wont use after you learn. Plus after you figure you want a good used board at least another say $400. So now we are up to $776 in say 3 months. You can buy a very good new longboard for that price.

I just fear that price is the motive for a lot of people and lack of knowledge and they get what they pay for. A board that is garbage to start with. Believe it or not there are companies out their for a quick dollar and they feed off of people that don't know what they are buying. Believe me I am not trying to disrespect you at all.

Ok I just googled salty dog surf shop. Are you in Fla? If so we can do better than Salty Dog. Looks like Berts Surf Shop up here a "chain". If it is you may want to steer clear. I don't really know but the chains usually fill positions with someone that can ring up a cash register and don't know a lot about surfing.

Daytona area, Ron Jon's is relatively close. About 40 minutes away. I know what you're saying though, bought a cheap skimboard then when back and got a really nice one once I figured out you could surf the shore break on a skimboard haha. Same with bodyboarding as well, I'm seeing a trend here

I'm really hoping Maui Nix calls me back about that board. Is there any real way to tell the difference between a pop-out board and a fiberglass one from the outside?

Edit - It would be really nice to find one for under 500. Maui also had a 8'6 "mix", looks like a longboard, board for 450. I'm no expert but 6 inches doesn't seem like THAT big of a deal. I'd order one online but from the other guys posts S&H was 150.

Ask if they are glass or epoxy. You can tell by sowme brand names too. For example Walden makes glass and epoxy boards. Both are very well made. Your looking for quality without a huge expense.

Alright, the only real non-chain shop we have around here is Progressive Sports, Sandy Point. They seem to be very expensive and don't carry used board though.
