You want to get to the wave as it is peaking (just before it breaks, when it is at it's steepest.) Paddle hard, and catch it. You know you've caught it when you start sliding down the wave, don't pop up to early, but pop up fast. When you catch it and start to get to the bottom of the wave, lean towards the wave face of the wave to do a bottom turn, level it out, and enjoy...
Once you've mastered catching it unbroken and doing the bottom turn, you should try some sort of top turn, I learned a snap first, but I don't know weather it is the right one to learn first. Just start out by extending the bottom tun up the face and then leaning back down the face, afterwards just continue with another bottom turn and another top turn.
This guy has quite a few good trick tips, really detailed, more information than you will ever remember while on a wave:

I chose to do a snap first since it seemed the most appropriate.
