dude...I'm from so cal where I surf all the time but moved out here to ohio to go to school so I only get to surf on breaks. Either way, I thought the exact same thing you did. I used to skateboard for a while so I was used to the difference in the "feeling." But if you know you can skate YES, buy a longboard! I love it and makes me feel so nostalgic. You can seriously do some nice carving like rail to rail surfing. Keep the trucks really loose and you can throw down some nice turns (just imagine the face of the wave and hitting the lip on sharp turns).

I dont know if they "help", but they sure are fun. Look for a new setup on ebay for around 120. A nice sector nine board with really any measurements would be good.

yea ive been thinking about getting one too.. i dont know if it help that much but it has to a little i mean ur working on ur balance ( my friend has a sector 9)

What I was wondering was when they first came out and they linked it with surfing, was it for like the longboarders ( in that era)... cause u can walk that board as well and stuff... so the question is, is the skateboarding longboarding linked to longboarding surfing (walking th ebaord and stuff) or shortboarding (like carving).. ???

EDIT Am i being wrong saying carving for shortboarding? ive never longbaorded before, can u carve ? lol

I'd say it's more like longboarding because you can walk the board and do really drawn out turns, or short ones (similar to long boarding and almost like shortboarding). If you're really good though I'd say it's just like shortboarding. You can throw out the back end in a really tight turn doing a power slide like on a shortboard.

Eitherway, a long skateboard seems to me like a longboard where as a short skateboard seems alot more like a shortboard (since it's a little more squirrely). Sorry if this all sounds confusing :?

It's not quite as simple as that though - there are hundreds of different size and shaped decks with lots of different flexes to them. Added on to that there are hundreds of different trucks and wheels. Each component gives a different feel to the board.

Providing you visit a good skate shop, or seek good advice before you go shopping, you'd be able to buy separate deck, trucks and wheels and then set the board up with the exact feel you ar elooking for.

That's one of the things it seems skate guys love, being able to chop and change and adjust all their components to get a board just how they like it.

For some reallf good advice - have a browse through this site - it's like a long-skate version of this website!

wahey, you have the same trucks and wheels as me. although mine is err 6 inches longer, and lollipop stick shaped.

why not make it yourself?

ive found that on hills that you want to go faster on and aviod speed wobbles just loosen the back trucks up a whole lot, and really crank down the front ones. It really helps keep the speed wobbles down.

For two radically different feels like that, you'd want two different complete boards. You could maybe get away with a mid-length good all round deck and then swap the trucks and wheels around but to be honest, the trucks and wheels are going to cost you almost as much as the deck so you may aswell go for two set-ups.

dougie - absolutely loving them. So smooth, stable and dreamy. Perfect carcing trucks I think

I just set a board up for my brother for Xmas - a pintail with 180's and 70's Flashbacks - just looks sumlime. He's going to be so stoked!!!
