"mini mal"

Why does everyone on here call funshapes min mals? What is the origin of that phrase? My dad has surfed for 40 years and has never heard the phrase, but I see it on here all over the place. Maybe it's a regional thing, I'm in FL, USA...

I live in Brazil and around here people call theese boards fuboards. Around the net i see much more Mini mal than funshape or funboard. Mini mal means mini Malibu, meaning a mini longboard. I dont know why longboards are called malibus.
Think that's all, right? Just a different way to call it.
I bet if i went around here asking for a mini malibu it would take some time till i got someone who knows what it is.
The same if i went asking for a thruster. Never heard it around here.
