hey OC locals Julie here from Huntington Beach, Cali. Well, i was asked from another forum an interesting question that i don't know. well, i was wondering if anyone knew anyone or company who gives surf lessons for cheap. And i mean cheap. The only one i can think of is HBWaihine on Main St that give lessons for like 75 bucks an hour and a minimum 3 hours. but that isn't really cheap for the person who asked me when i told her.if u know any places or people, please let me know, it'd really help. Oh and if its posible keep it in the west coast from Coasta Mesa to Newport to Huntington -to Bolsa Chica to Long Beach. it'd help. Thanx

Hey Julie,

I'm in the same area. Have you tried asking a friend for help? I think you'l learn much better that way and save yourself a bundle. I think the money could go towards getting a beginners board rather than for the lessons. $75 dollars an hour seems pretty steep and I'm sure people are more than willing to help out.

hey jimi, well, i've asked a few of my freinds about it and some don't know how to surf and some just don't have time and I ask if they knew any shops that give lessons but they either only know about the HBWaihine or some other ones they weren't to sure about. So far someone e-mailed me about one In the Bolsa chica and the huntington Beach area for around $50 bucks for an hour private lesson and i forgot the rest but its on a website called http:/www.surfschool.net it seems good. I've also found a guy who lives around me and he gives lessons. he's not no like pro or licensed guy who works for a company and is willing to give a lesson for cheap but i'm not sure whether it's worth it. He says it's $55-$75 for 1-1 1/2 hours. If u know anyone who does that kind of lessons, you know, like "the guy next door" who gives lessons. Just locals that are willing to give lessons for cheap. That kind of stuff. And well,,"researching" this stuff for the other person in that other forum is quite tempting 'cause I think i want to get lessons now.LOL sorry getting off the topic. I'm not sure whether to go with a company's surf lessons program or with a lesson w/ that guy. but yeah anyways if u or anyone else knows anyone who does that side job surf lessons or something, it would be helpful. Thanx

Hey, my first lesson was my uncle dropping me off at the beach with his old 9'3" and telling me to figure it out and he'd be back in a couple of hours. Not much of a lesson but after reading forums on the internet and stuff like that, it wasnt that bad. Just try and go out with some friends. they'll give you pointers and not all the kids out in the water are dicks, most other surferes will help you out. you can do it, just get out there and have fun, dont try to look cool or whatever, just catch some waves. good luck .

I'm also from OC, found a place in SanDiego, La Jolla that does a weekend clinic (4 hours total) group lesson for about $135. Ratio is 5 to 1, and beach isn't overly crowded. They specialize in teaching girls and women to surf. I learned about in the book A girl's guide for getting good waves. The book is written by the owners of the surf school, Surf Diva.
It's only about a 1 1/2 hour drive to La Jolla from most points in OC.

i agree with CHH. my first time was a big foamie, not knowing anything except whatever the media was screamin at me. luckly, the guys out there were all awesome, didnt care when i dropped in on their waves, let me try out their boards, and were giving me tons of tips. thats probably one of the strongest things that kept me surfing. of course, this led me to believe that all the surfers out there are like this, but then i found out at 1st street, on a mediocre day where its nothing everywhere else, almost everyone is an absolute ass.
just do it.
