How to secure boards?

Postby jitterbug » Fri Oct 22, 2004 3:47 am

Hi, have a question:
How can I safely strap my surfboards to the roof of my SUV? i have to drive 60+ mph for 1/2 hr.... boards are 6'8 and 7'6''. The car has a factory rack, so can i use bungee straps or need something stronger?
thanks!

no - you need to get a set of roof straps. Bungee cords are not strong enough plus they have strecth in them.

Youd be surprised the amount of force on a 7'6" board at 60mph!

you need something like this:

you also want to make sure you have foam piping on your rack or you could damage you rboard. You can buy branded ones with velcro but it's dead easly just to make your own from regular pipe insualtion stuff and strong tape.

board straps or luggage straps or something of that sort definately. i use an fcs soft rack myself and dont trust it much over 70 - but definately no bungees, they would stretch, board will wobble, maybe fly off=no fun. plus, luggage straps you can get nice and tight. the board will wobble anyways prob, but will be a lot safer, also, fins in front for better aerodynamics.

alot of my mates use bicycle inner tubes (road bike inners), they cut the valve assembly out first (so they don't have the chance to scratch your boards), strength with a bit of give.

Dirt cheap, effective & I've never seen em lose a board yet.
