little east coast waves

I am dying to try surfing soon, but wonder which spots in the USA have the best waves for beginners. I'm on the east coast in MD, but am definitely willing to travel for easiest waves to learn on, as I want as positive an experience as possible my first time out. And in my case this means small ones--I am not exactly a young woman anymore! Thanks.

Hi Sharkle - I can relate! I'm trying to learn - I've only been out twice so far. I've chose to learn this hobby much later in life than most women.

I too wanted my first experience to be a good one. I live on the west coast of Florida so there's not much action here. I tried hooking up with an instructor on the east coast for a couple of months but hurricane threats kept hitting us every weekend for a while.
I finally just decided to go one weekend. It was rough and I got beat up pretty bad. I was exhausted before I ever even attempted to get on the board! But I was glad that I had the experience and began my journey. So I say just do it.

I don't know what the waves are like up there but if you want smaller waves and looking for a road trip, you might want to try Florida.

little east coast waves

Xalley, thanks so much for your response and the encouragement. I think I'll ask around about Florida waves, and look forward to warmer water at least. I can relate to being beat up further north; I just got back from Duck, NC and the water was choppy and a little too rough for swimming the entire week. Sigh. Good for you, just going out anyway. You are brave!

Im in south florida...

On a good day we get pretty good beginner swells, but that would have to be one hell of a travel for u all
Central florida- Melbourne-Cocoa- Seems to always get nice swells... shitty days for them is like amazing days for us... so that seems like a good area to learn... Cost of living is cheap so come out and spend a couple weeks out here during october or november... we always get nice swells this time.

But if yah come 2 south florida u wont really catch much on south beach... just certain spots...
Mainly ft lauderdale - deerfield- jupiter

hope tjhat helps... prolly not cause u all r in baltimore

Hey, thanks to all for replying; I did not receive notice in my e-mail that some of these replies had been posted, or I would have thanked sooner! I will definitely get to FL unless I lose patience and go to MD or DE before then (much closer to me!).

I'm from CT and my girlfriend and I got into surfing pretty decently this summer, she had done it once before. Being my first time I seriously sucked at it, but we were up in Maine on York Beach and there were some pretty decent beginner waves up there. The one day a storm was blowing in it got a little crazy, but was still fun. Next year we're wondering about heading down to the Jersey shore somewhere.
