Lake Ontario

Hello everyone. I recently moved to the upstate NY area. With gas prices what they are 5-6 hr trips to the ocean are out of the question, but I still want to get some surf this summer.

I have heard talk of surfing on Lake Ontario and am in the search. If anyone has info on where I can catch some surf on Lake Ontario or wants to paddle out with me that would be sweet.

I Lived in Kingston Ontario For while and we used to go to Picton Beach. Some surf on windy days ! Hope that helps ?

i'm in the same position, but on lake erie and i don't have a board yet but want to get one that would be surfable on lake erie. they did have a web site for lake erie surfers but last time i checked it was shut down

When the ocean is a hundreds of miles away , and if you want to surf, you have no options....

Sentenced to at least a year in Syracuse, NY myself. Have heard that Lake Ontario breaks but am very skeptical to wave quality and size. If it has any type of push to it, I guess I wouldn't mind driving in search. Anyone else in this area with more knowledge, feel free to comment.

Don't try to force a square peg into a round hole. The way I see it you have 2 options:
Option 1: take up wake boarding, snowboarding, skiing windsurfing etc. as you're primarly hobby since that works with your living situation
Option 2: If you must surf, you'll have to plan a few vacations to the Atlantic (or if you have the $$$ fly to more exotic surf locations) to get your surfing fix

Trying to surf on the Great Lakes isn't going to work on a regular basis. There may be those really windy days a few times a year where you'll get some 2-3 footers but that is probably it.

I just moved to kingston from nova scotia, and i want to surf in lake ontario... where are those pictures from? which beach or area did you go too in kingston? i am very interested, i miss surfing alot.

i never surfed lake erie but i grew up there and used to skim there. there are definitely surfable days especially when it gets cold and storms start to roll in. im not sure where around the lake youre located but i grew up in Erie, PA and if youre near the area check out Elements Boardshop they have surf, SUP, snowboards, skateboards, and a lot more. real nice shop and real nice people (www.elementsboardshop.com). if you are near erie and go to the peninsula you can usually surf when its windy or stormy from any direction there will always be a break somewhere on the peninsula. good luck dude

what's the go with the fresh water. you will obviously be less buoyant. is it noticeable?

Hey guys ask around and google it there are standing waves in rivers all over the place. Some even have surfing clubs attached.
Beware though some spots may be prohibited by local ordinance. To get the idea, take a look at the Eisbach in Munich in Germany.

so has anyone realy surfed in lake ontario? i just moved to belleville from Hali and its not lookeing optomistic. any pointers?

I have grown up on lake ontario. This is the first I have ever herd of the possibility of surf on it.
I am not saying it can't be done, but I would definately like to know where and in what season?
I just started surfing and had to come to the UK to learn. So the prospect of continueing when I get home is very exciting.

hate to tell you this but this was filmed in a salt water estuary in either northern New South Wales or southern Queensland Australia, by the Webber Brothers using trawler wake on a sand bar ( DVD Liquid Time) warm salt water but a nice clip none the less, get the DVD perfect mini waves for mind surfing.


Kudos to all cold and frigid water surfers, our worst in New South Wales is 13c but strangely this can occur in summer when the air is 40c you scream across the scalding sand hit the water and the contrast when you are only inboard shorts and rashy drives your gonads to becoming two lumps in your throat.

I'll have to cope with the lower temperature sometime when I come to Europe to ride the Mascaret or Severn Bore (my personal bucket list)
