Wax vs deck grip pads

Does anyone have a preference??? I have friends who use deck grip on just the back, and some who have it on the front and the back. I just wax the whole lot, but sometimes by the end of a session there is no traction left, so im thinking about going the deck grip and im just curious what everyone else thinks!

lol. It was a quasi-politcal satirical comment based on the common misconception that surfing is all about looking cool. I ride a mal, what do I know about cool? :wink:

grip @ back, wax on the front - but i wax right down to the grip coz occasionally i step off the grip to gain a bit more speed down the face.

I use all wax.
I havn't noticed a need for more grip. However, I'm not that advanced of a surfer. Maybe when I progress and I'm pushing my turns harder, I'll feel the need to put on a deck grip.

As yu progress, you really wouldnt want grip on the deck, coz ur fete get "stuck" and hurt when you do airs etc

Also it's really restrictive when your moving your front foot around, trying to get out of that nasty barrel trying to swallow you whole

Deck Grip on the back wax on the front (shortboard)... don't mind all waxed but hate front deck grips; rips your tummy up!

I have never seen anyone using a front deck grip.

Back in the 80's people use to go ape sh#t with the Gorilla grip; you can still see a number of old 80's early 90's boards with the deck fully gripped out. Wax has improved and much better in warmer climates now... Back pads are always good for locating your possition on the board just through feel.

Front deck grip seems to have faded out. My friend went looking for one, went to all the surf shops, contacted bucket loads of suppliers but with no luck...he had to use two back grip pads, and cut the front a little so it would work...

wel deck grip is good coz when ur up on the wave it gives u a gd point where to persision ur feet

I posted on the front deck traction discussion originally.

I've used (back in the day) Gorilla Grip front pads, and again and I tried one early last year on one board to see if anything had improved.
The problem is yes, they do work, and yes when new they are way better than wax...but they don't stay that way for ever...as you lie on them with your wetsuit top or rashie and move about paddling you polish-off the traction pad and the grippy bits smooth off. After about 3 months of constant use...you have a slippery bit of carpet on your board.
They're pricks to get off as well.

Wax is better.

But, having said that...I still can't believe in 2006 we're using wax to give us grip on our surfboards, it's a throwback to the 1950's (like Clark Foam with surfboards until recently) Sex Wax has a virtual monopoly...and it's been easier to use the existing rather than invent a better alternative.

front deck grips are still used in warmer climes byr more hirsute types, wax and hairy chests dont really mix (unless you happen to be that way inclined)

I think its quite exciting laying on a fresh coat of wax. It gets you in the surfing mood just before you head out. Plus it can always start a friendly conversation with other surfers "got any wax mate?"
