stevie,
there are many good ones to choose from. But, there is one that started the serious surfing films genre. That's "Endless Summer" (1966). That's my favorite. Call me corny, but #2 for me is the original "Gidget" (1959). And, if fortunate enough to watch on full-size movie theatre screen, then I'm crazy for "Riding Giants" (2004).

but, stevie, don't waste your time watching movies. Be smart; read books! :P

Just a list since I collect them.
All the early Bruce Brown movies that preceded Endless Summer and Endless Summer II
Barefoot Adventure, Surfing Hollow Days, Slippery When Wet, Surf Crazy, there's also Surfing Shorts but is a bit cobbled together.
Then Bruce and his son Dana made, Step into Liquid.

The early Bud Brown film are dry but feel historic perhaps even prehistoric

Then come the Aussie films led by Morning of the Earth.

MOTE as it is known is pretty much a classic for Aussies as it shows the beginnings of the affair many Aussie surfers have with Bali and the escape to the country counter culture stage Australian surfers went through during the Vietnam War. So it sort of covers the same period as Big Wednesday but not as a quasi fictional piece.

A lot of later movies are show pieces for the stable of surfers related to a surf brand and are IMO pretty poor.

ive been watching larry bertlemann's parts in super session over and over again lately. i love how on waves he felt were unmakeable backside, he would just switch stance and face the wave. that guy could surf.

Surely Point Break is the best surf film evah!

Ben Harp: Special agent Utah! This is not some job, flipping burgers at the local drive-in! Yes! - your surf board bothers me! Yes! - your approach to this whole damn case bothers me! And yes! - YOU BOTHER ME! And Pappas! Oh, for the love of Christ. How the hell did I even let you talk me into this whole bone-headed idea to begin with.
Pappas: Harp! We are working under-cover. It takes time. We've produced a few...
Ben Harp: NO! No no no no no no NO! Let me tell you what you've produced... Over the last two weeks, you two have produced exactly squat! SQUAT! During which time the ex-presidents have robbed two more banks. Now for Christ's sake, does either one of you have anything even remotely interesting to tell me?
[brief pause]
Johnny Utah: I caught my first tube today... Sir.

How has this discussion gone on so long without someone mentioning North Shore? Legendary.

Point Break! Does Fast Times at Ridgemont High count? Really though, probably Taylor Steeles campaign movies. Honorable mention to Endless Summer.

I LOVE 'ISLANDS IN THE STREAM'!!!!

Sorry bit over excited there. It's got Donavon Frankenreiter, Tom Curren Layne Beachley and more and is just a well formulated soulful film. It has to be one of the best feel good surfing films ever. Great soundtrack also.

Another good one is a British surf film called 'The Endless Winter' (Was on Channel 4 in the UK). It's a docu about the UK surf scene. Good watch.
