SUP board vs SURF shortboard

Hello,

I am new to world of surf. Could anyone explain to me the difference between the SUP board and the surf board. May I use a shortboard surf 6'4'' BIC to do SUP with a suitable paddle ??I already have a BIC surf 6'4''. Thank you

Welcome and If you do decide to give this a go please, please, please have someone on hand with a video camera to record your efforts and then post it up please! :wink:

In short your bic will not be bouyant enough for you to stand on.

Yes, as long as you are no more than 2ft tall.

By a strange coincidence, your surfboard is too short to learn surfing too.

OP, let us know if you decide to sell that SUP setup. My Dachshund has expressed an interest in SUP :mrgreen:

All kidding aside, SUP boards are considerably thicker, wider, and longer (usually 10+ ft) than even most longboards. They are made to float a standing rider even when they're not planing.

Thank you I understand all the above concerns. I will forget SUP!! This board 6'7'' is it ok for doing just surf. I am 60kg and 1.72m or 5'7''ft?????? This board will surface on the water with me at times or not???

it's a little small for learning on. Possible to do, but it will be difficult. It would be a lot easier for you to use a 8ft board for a while before stepping down to the 6'7.

hmm,can I tack a question here, is there such a thing as a hybrid surfboard/ SUP?

There are at the bottom end of the size scale for SUPs longboard length boards ( often performance type) that are wider and thicker than a "normal" longboard.After all you have to be able to stand on them without wave speed.
Mostly used by really good SUPers ( but that could be an oxymoron) in competitions.

They do make smaller SUP's but they are not for begginers, far from it. It takes way too much skill to stay standing on a small board.

Do a search for begginer advise and stick to it, don't bypass the basics...

I do use my SUPs to lay surf doubles with my kids and their friends. Last weekend I pushed 3 girls on the same board ages 9-11 into a 2 footer. They rode it all the way in. Moms on the cameras!!
After that wave one of the girls took out a smaller sup and proceeded to catch a lot of waves laying down. It was funny as her hands could only reach the water to about her forearms....but she got a bunch of long rides.
There are many sizes and shapes of wave riding vehicles...the surfers job is to find the one that fits the surfer and the conditions.
